Day one of Britain's longest bicycle race saw the 95 riders complete the stage at an average speed of almost 26mph. This first stage, of 101 miles was set in the country lanes around Chobham Common in west Surrey.

An early break by Adrian Lansley (Pedalon.co.uk), and Duncan Urqhart and Paul Butler of Prestige VC was soon joined by a larger group which eventually numbered around 18 riders. This larger group extended the gap from the main bunch to some two minutes, although this came down to around 90 seconds by the end of the race as the front group splintered and attacks came from the following group.

The stage was eventually won by Irishman, Brian Keneally of Team Munster, closely followed by Duncan Urqhart (Prestige VC) and Neil Coleman (Alcan Bianchi).

This stage was essentially flat, with just one small hill for the climbers to battle over but even this was enough to see a number of riders fall off the back of the race. Tomorrow's stage at Newdigate, to the south east of Crawley, has more hills through rolling Surrey countryside but is nevertheless another very fast circuit. The climbers must wait until Sunday to see the first of the major ascents when they get to the South Downs at Goodwood.
