Bertagnolli surprises to win Coppa Agostoni

Just one day after his Saeco teammate Danilo Di Luca finished second in Tre Valli Varesine, domestique Leonardo Bertagnolli took an impressive victory in the Coppa Agostoni after a late attack. The Trentino born rider, who won his first ever professional race at the Giro dell'Etna in spring, was part of the decisive break that formed 80km from the finish of the race. He then took advantage of the fact that the others in the break were closely marking Giro d'Italia winner Damiano Cunego, who again showed he is on form ready for the final part of the season.

Bertagnolli was part of the final selection of six riders, but knowing he was not the fastest finisher, he made a pre-emptive attack with one kilometre from the line, finishing alone, 50 metres ahead of second placed Dario Frigo.

"I'm incredibly happy to have won," said the Saeco rider. "I've taken a traditionally important race and I'm really proud. The Saeco team put their faith in me and I think I've paid them back in the best possible way. I hope I can keep riding well so that I can get some other good results and perhaps be considered for the Italian team for the World Championships in Verona."
