Stage 2 - April 10: Killorglin-Killorglin , 96 miles

Downing brothers in charge

By Tommy Campbell

The Sheffield brothers, Dean and Russell Downing representing the Recycling.Co.Uk/MG XPower are showing the way in the Credit Union Ras Mumhan cycling event after yesterday's testing stage around the Ring of Kerry. Russell takes over from his brother, Dean, who won the opening stage on Friday. He timed his effort meticulously on the outskirts of Glenbeigh to move ahead. Of course his time trialling ability came to the fore as he soloed to victory on the stage and race leader of the five-stage four-day event. Despite picking up a penalty during the stage, David O'Loughlin heads the Irish hopes back in third place adrift of the leader by 29 seconds which includes a 10 second penalty incurred during the stage which started and finished in Killorglin. The time trial this morning could ultimately decide the overall honours when the event concludes tomorrow.
