Stage 4 - June 12: Kitzbühel - St. Jakob im Defereggental, 149 km
Sijmens wins fourth stage; Glomser still strong
Nico Sijmens (Vlaanderen T-Interim) has claimed the victory in the uphill sprint in St. Jakob im Defereggental that marked the end of the fourth stage of the Tour of Austria. The Belgian beat the ever consistent Gerrit Glomser (Saeco), who gained a few more bonus seconds on his rivals for the general classification. Third place went to Ivailo Gabrovski (MBK), who is sitting in second on GC.
The 149 km stage started in Kitzbühel and contained two climbs in the first 42 km. The second climb (Felbertauernpass) was the toughest, rising to 1632m after climbing for 14 km at 8 percent. However Saeco controlled the field for the first part of the race, and no-one dared attack the race leader. Rinaldo Nocentini (Formaggi Pinzolo) was first over the top, solidifying his position as the leader in the mountains classification.
The field remained together until after the second intermediate sprint at 90 km, when Frederic Gabriel (MBK Oktos) attacked. The Frenchman built up a lead of 2'40 with 30 km to go, with Saeco and Formaggi Pinzolo riding tempo the whole time. As the road climbed towards St. Jakob im Defereggental, Gabriel began to lose ground quickly and was caught just before 20 km to go. The race became quite animated after that, with a group of seven including Francisco Lara Ruiz (Team Bianchi), Bernhard Kohl (Rabobank), Andreas Matzbacher (Austrian National) and Christian Pfannberger (Volksbank) getting clear. Lara Ruiz attacked this group and had 15 seconds lead with 4 km to go, but couldn't hold off the peloton's charge in the end. Sijmens won the stage from Glomser and Gabrovski, with 37 riders finishing in the front group.
Tomorrow's stage goes from Lienz to St. Kanzian am Klopeinersee over 200 km, and contains only two Cat. 2 climbs.
