Stage 3 - June 11: Bad Gastein - Kitzbühler Horn, 158 km
Glomser wins again
Defending Tour of Austria champion Gerrit Glomser now has a firm grip on the race after winning the tough third stage from Bad Gastein to Kitzbühler Horn. Glomser, who also won stage 2, showed his versatility by beating Jure Golcer (Volksbank Ideal) and Ivailo Gabrovski (MBK) after another well timed attack with 1 km to go. On the general classification, Glomser now leads Golcer and Gabrovski by 36 and 47 seconds respectively.
Glomser said afterwards that the race isn't won yet, especially with tomorrow's 149 km stage between Kitzbühl and St. Jakob im Defereggental. "I'm worried about tomorrow's stage...it includes three big climbs," he said. "I'm going to have keep my eyes open and be at my best, but fortunately I've got a great team to back me up and I feel good."
He dedicated the win to his Saeco teammates, and was congratulated by Giro winner Gilberto Simoni at the finish, who was there with team manager Claudio Corti.
The stage was marked by an eight man breakaway that went clear at the 77 km mark, containing Martin Rittsel, Kristof Trouve, Rafael Nuritdinov, Markus Wimmer, Franck Pencole, Jurgen van de Walle, Niels Scheuneman and Philippe Schnyder. The leaders rode hard to establish a maximum 2'15 gap to the bunch, which was controlled by Saeco and the Austrian national team.
Once they hit the climb of the Kitzbühler Horn, it was all over for the break, and Saeco set a steady pace up the last 10 km to burn off the peloton and set things up for Glomser. The Austrian did not disappoint, attacking with one kilometre to go on the steep climb to put significant gaps into his main rivals.
