'Bring it On!' Race Series

Race #3 - Alachua, FL, January 29, 2005

Where the first two editions of the 'Bring it on!' series dealt with tough winds and inclement weather, the third day of the competition brought mild and relatively calm conditions. This was contrary to forecasts, so overall attendance was down at the prospect of another battle with Mother Nature. However, there were still plenty of optimistic souls to tackle the course.

In the A Grade competition, attendance was primarily supported by the concurrent Cycle Science racing team's training camp. With most of its forces on hand, it was their race to lose. Several riders refused to go down without a fight and the University of Florida Team proved to put up the best fight. Throughout the race, UF rider David Guttenplan made several extended attempts to escape the field and the Cycle Science stranglehold. All of the action began with Guttenplan hammering off the front with Jim Wright (Jax Racing Club) from the word 'Go!' After several laps of steady chasing, Cycle Science reeled in the first challenge with 15 of 25 laps remaining.

After the subsequent flurry of attacks, the key move of the race escaped with Cycle Science in the majority. Ryan Saylor and Rudy Robaina (both Cycle Science) were clear with Brad Davis (Ford), and the three slowly built a 20 second lead. Again, the UF team was first to fight back as Anton Tupa (UF) and Guttenplan drove the nearest chase group. This group also included Chuck Jerabek (Jax Racing Club), Marc Damon (Outspoken), and last week's winner Dan Larson (Cycle Science) in tow. This chase closed the gap at the expense of the fading Damon, but soon Larson took advantage of the efforts and leapt across the small gap to the leaders. While the chase struggled to close the remaining gap, Saylor and Larson exercised a punch/counter punch maneuver on the isolated rider Davis. This sprung Larson to a solo lead, and moments before the UF chasers could make contact, Robaina jumped clear to join Larson in the lead with only 1 ½ laps remaining. Robaina led Larson across the finish for the win, while the chasers battled in a tight finish for third. Jerabek nipped the youngster Guttenplan on the line while Davis and Saylor claimed fifth and sixth respectively.

The Women's event featured an opportunity of sorts for all of the competitors. With some of the frequent elite women participants sitting out of the day's race, it was literally any woman's race. With one group receiving a one and a half minute handicap, it was questionable whether the scratchwomen could come through for the win. This was further put into question as outmarker Eugena Rodriguez (UF) made a solo charge for a majority of the race. It was her rising star UF teammates, Teresa Garcia and Elisabeth Schneider that ultimately proved her undoing. After clearing the handicap, Garcia and Schneider rode away to battle for the win in a two-up sprint. While Garcia had been known to have a quick finish, it was Schneider that came in clear with a long hard charge to the line. Behind, the other scratchwomen were also able to clear the group with Veronica Geist (unattached) besting Kristen Bowers (Atomic) for third. Rodriguez held on to lead all of the outmarkers for fifth overall.

The B grade event was dominated by another rising star from UF's large stable of talent. The winner of the first week's race, Phil Gaimon (UF), again proved his mettle by riding away from all challengers alone. While the chase intermittently started and stopped, Gaimon build his solo lead steadily to the finish. With the top spot clearly decided, the field battled in a group sprint for the remaining honors. Week two winner Dominik Girouard (UF) again displayed his sprinting speed and salvaged second place. Mark Keister, Robbie Newsome, Rhys Williams, and Brett Miller (all UF) completed their team sweep of the prizes with third-sixth respectively.
