Results and Reports from the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Saco Bay CriteriumSaco, Maine USA, August 27, 2005King defends title at Saco BayRob King (Louis Garneau Racing Team) successfully defended his title at the 2005 Saco Bay Criterium Presented by Maine Energy, winning a war of attrition Saturday with a little help from teammate Dan Greenfield. Canadian Nat Faulkner took second while Greenfield finished third in the elite race -- now in its seventh year. King and Greenfield were part of an 10-man break that stole away in the first laps of the race in Saco and unexpectedly stayed away for the entire day. While the breakaway's lead was never greater than 30 seconds, the field of chasers couldn't organize themselves in time to pull the escapers back into the fold. Toby Walch, who races for the Portland, Maine-based Mechanical Services team, was part of the break and looked to be on great form until midway through the race, when he slid out navigating a rotary on the course. Although Walch remounted and rejoined the lead group, he was unable to effectively attack King after the mishap. As the top Maine finisher, Walch was crowned the 2005 state champion. The winner was also pressed by Conor Hurley and Justin Lillie of Boston Scientific, who managed to finish fifth and sixth on the day behind Jesse Anthony, a national cyclocross champion who races on the road for Essex County Velo of Massachusetts. Coming into the final lap, Faulkner and the two Louis Garneau riders slipped the grasp of their fellow attackers and rode down the final stretch alone. Greenfield launched an attack that Faulkner was forced to cover, and King easily came around the Canadian to notch the victory. King's victory in Saco not only confirmed the promise he first showed by winning Saco last year, but also the excellent form the Brentwood, New Hampshire rider has carried into this year. Earlier this month, King placed seventh overall in the U.S. Elite Criterium Championship in Downer's Grove, Illinois. Maine State Champions CrownedThe race's sponsoring club, Southern Maine Cycling Club, showed the breadth of its program by claiming no less than four state championships on the day. Kennebunk resident Collin Huston -- in his first road race -- won the 10-14 year-old state crown while Saco native Steve Simonds won the 15-18 year-old Maine title. Simonds is just 15. On the other end of the age spectrum, Westbrook resident Paul Niehoff was the state's top finisher in the 50-54 year-old category while Kennebunk resident Joe Hepp won the 55 and older division. All are SMCC members. Other Maine state titlists include John Grenier (Maine Cycling Club) of Lewiston in the 45-49 category; Sean Steady (Linscott Real Estate Racing Team) of South Portland in the 35-44 category; Brendan Cornett (Maine Cycling Club) in the 19-23 category; and Terri Wentzel (Maine Cycling Club) in the Women's field. Among category-specific racers, Portland's Jurgen Nebelung (Portland Velo Club) won the Men's 3 division Maine state title and Nicholas Smith of Surry won the Men's Category 4/5 state title.
