Texas State Road Race Championships

Rose & NWCC Power to texas victory

For the second year in a row, the Bryan Power Pedal event hosted the Texas State Road Championships, which featured 8 laps of a 13.1mi loop around Lake Bryan. The course has two rolling sections, one long false flat and two hills, all exposed to the wind. The first hill is the KOM climb about 5 miles from the finish, and the last is the finishing hill, 500m at 4%.

The race started quickly, with the field hesitant to let the first few breaks go. Eventually two riders got away, and their numbers were quickly augmented by people bridging from the field. At the start of the 2nd lap there was a five-rider break @ 1:30, a four-rider break at 1:00, and three riders dangling off the front of the peloton. Those three groups eventually integrated with about 2:00 on the field. With all the major teams represented the break was given virtual free-rein and the speed in the field dropped to 15mph at times, with San Jose and Lucky Lounge blocking at the front on the narrow roads.

Midway through the race, Gregg Germer of Team Flanders, recently back from Europe, tried a move over the KOM climb, looking to split the pack. Only Steen Rose and Thomas Hallock of NWCC responded. The threesome quickly built a lead of around a minute, but the field was chasing hard and there was a lot of racing left, and the three sat up to try their chances again later.

With a little over 40 miles left, the Midwestern State University rider in the break got dropped, causing his 5 teammates in the field to go to the front. Their rotating echelon at the front guttered the entire field and made things extremely difficult for a lap and a half until the break was caught.

3 riders, two from Lucky Lounge and one from San Jose, countered and had a decent gap when Max Miley (coach of US Postal's Patrick McCarty) of Plano Cycling bridged across. At the bell, they had a little over a minute on the field, which was disorganized from the final trip through the feed zone. Matt Seagrave of Team Diabetic went, and the field failed to respond. Everybody was looking around waiting for someone else to take up the chase, and of course Lucky Lounge, San Jose, and Plano, all represented in the break, were happy to let things unravel. Jumping across in ones and twos, 8 riders finally joined Seagrave in the second group, which was rapidly expanding its lead over the field.

NWCC went to the front, and Hallock dropped the hammer to bring the race back together. Through the end of the rolling section, up the long false flat, and across the flat run-in to the base of the climb Hallock drilled the pace, dragging the entire field through the gutter and up to the now-combined group of 13.

With the field back together at the base of the KOM climb, and only 5 miles left to race, things were understandably tense. The group fanned out across the road, watching and waiting. Rose set a hard tempo up the climb and was surprised to find himself alone at the top. He looked back, and waited when he saw his teammate Hallock coming across. The two hooked up and started to drive the pace, and Stephan Rothe of MSU barely made it up to them. The three quickly increased their lead, and although a few riders attempted to bridge, they were unsuccessful. Back in the field, no one wanted to work, and the opportunity to stifle the attack was soon lost and the peloton found itself racing for 4th.

With only 1k remaining, and the field not yet in sight around the last curve, the pressure was finally off the 3 leaders and they began to think about the sprint. Around the final turn 500m from the line Hallock led it out, followed by Rothe and then Rose. Rothe jumped with 300m to go, but didn't quite have the legs. Rose came around and took the win, with the indefatigable Hallock in 2nd.

The field came in a minute later, led by Germer, Robbie Robinette of San Jose and Edgar Iberra of Richardson Bike Mart.

(A number of riders, including 3rd-6th place, were disqualified for crossing the yellow line.)
