Results and Reports from the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Bryan Park Cycling SeriesRichmond, VA, June 15, 2004Richmond Ciclismo's Stephen Selby timed his last sprint to beat the rain and the rest of the field to win Tuesday's Bryan Park Cycling Series. Selby used Three Sports John McGarva like a tool to catch a four-man break. When McGarva caught the break, Selby countered the exhausted four that included team-mate Matt Dinsmore. "I'm lucky I got away by myself," Selby said. "If I had somebody up with me I wouldn't have been as motivated. If I was alone, I knew that I could win it." With four laps to go, Sean Tunstall of SP Imports/Palani Drive and Rob Suydam of Virginia Beach Velo/East Coasts Bikes bridged the gap between Dinsmore and Mark Plourde of Contes/Cycor. McGarva, riding after some upgrade points, decided having Selby tag along wasn't a bad idea. "I didn't have any team-mates in the break," McGarva said. "The second we bridged, he (Selby) countered. Everybody was tired. It was a perfect move." Suydam added, "Then Dinsmore could sit in and watch John and I chase down Selby. Tactically, that was the best race I've seen Ciclismo ride." And Suydam knows cycling. He's currently ranked second among the Commonwealth of Virginia's elite cyclists. His friends from the Fredericksburg area team Bike Works see to it that the former member gets the support while racing at Bryan Park. At the end of the race, sprinters Matt Mega of Ciclismo and Bill Malone of Cobblestone sped past the dysfunctional break. Mega placed second. Malone placed fourth behind third place Tunstall. Dinsmore held on for fifth. Mega still won. He won an entry for pair of 404 Zipp racing wheels, valued at $1,350, in a raffle to benefit the Massey Cancer Center at MCV. The Richmond Triathlon Club donated wheels will be awarded July 25 during the Shady Grove Triathlon. All proceeds of the raffle will go to the center. Next week, race organizers plan three more raffles. Palani Drive, Carb Boom Energy Gels and Elvin Jefferson helped sponsor the race's prime laps. Primes (preems) are bonus sprints held throughout the race. The race avoided last year's rain cancellation curse. So, the course stayed dry. It only began to rain as the riders finished their cool down lap. Three Sports' Andrew Wolack won the earlier 6 p.m. B-race in a duel with Team Cobblestone's Chip Gobles. Wolack followed his brother's lead, accelerating up the hill to the finish, as Gobles followed team-mate and third place finisher Dan King. "When we came around (the last turn) and I saw my brother Matthew in front of the field, I got on his wheel and told him to 'Hit it real hard,'" Wolack said. "The Cobblestone guys attacked at that point. We started to come up the hill together." Wolack said he saw, "Out of the corner of my eye" Gobles begin to sprint. Wolack won the race at the line. The placements are reversed from last week when Gobles powered past second place Wolack. Beating the category 4 Jefferson Cup champion is a good step for someone, like Wolack, who aspires to move up the cycling levels. As a team, Three Sports didn't field many entry level cyclists last year. But this year its B-race cyclists aggressively ride at the front. "We support a multitude of athletes from duathletes, triathletes, elite level runners, elite level swimmers and we have a few, die-hard, cyclists - like myself," Wolack added.
