Bare was one of three ACT-UPMC riders to compete in the event - Mateo Sasso finished 9th, while Joe Papp crashed heavily while off the front in the closing kilometers of the race. After Papp's crash, which came when his breakaway partner lost control in the course's only turn, bringing down both riders, ACT-UPMC defaulted to its strategy of setting-up Bare for the sprint. "Needless to say I was concerned when I saw Joe fall, but not for the sake of the victory." recounted Bare. "He [Papp] has had much bad luck this season, and I thought 'Oh no, not again.'" Sasso takes up the commentary, "On the last lap, I knew the win would be decided between Greg and Martes of Mengoni, and I simply did my job of giving Greg the clearest path to the finish." As Sasso shepherded Bare towards the front in the last kilometer, Martes' teammate Jason Schneider did the same for him. The two sprinters burst to the front with 300m to go, and Martes quickly gained a bikelength on the Uruguayan. Bare, who also won the 1km ITT on the track at the 1999 B Worlds, clawed his way back but simply ran out of time before the line. "I should have taken him from further out," lamented Bare, "but given the circumstances - five Mengoni's vs. Mateo and me, there is not much more to say." Sasso hung on after delivering the leadout to finish ninth. And as for Papp, who is preparing for the Univest GP with the help of new coach Hunter Allen, the ACT-UPMC captain escaped serious injury, though he totalled his Fuji Team Issue bicycle, which slammed into a telephone pole.
