Joe Papp Wins Quakertown Criterium

ACT-UPMC's captain Joe Papp won today's Quakertown Criterium, contested in Quakertown, PA. Riding without the support of his usual cast of international teammates, Papp just passed his breakaway companion Kyle Wamsley (FUJI) in the final meters of the 30-mile race to take his second win of the week. On Wednesday, Papp - a native of Pittsburgh, PA - won the Allegheny Cycling Association's prestigious Summer Criterium. "While winning on Wednesday was nice, I suffered far more today and feel like I earned a victory," explained Papp. He and Wamsley, who rode the Vuelta a Cuba with Papp this year as a guest member of the ACT-UPMC team, were part of a nine-rider breakaway that lapped the field early in the race. Ofoto.com professional Scott Zwizanski and Colavita-Bolla's JJ Haedo were both active in the attacks that followed after the field was lapped, but only Wamsley responded when the ACT-UPMC man accelerated hard out of the first turn, a sharp 130-degree curve.

"Kyle worked very well with me, and I applaud his aggressive style. I was psyched that he was the one who followed the move," recounted Papp. At first, the duo exchanged quick, quarter-lap pulls, but the fast pace - and the relentless pursuit by the chasers - put Wamsley in difficulty. With 18 laps to go, he cracked and slipped back, caught halfway between Papp and the next group. "It was a difficult situation for me," said Papp, "as I was loathe to slow down and wait for Kyle, thereby breaking my rhythm, but not excited about the prospect of 18 laps on my own." Papp continued solo for four laps, but when it became apparent that Wamsley was not going to lose any more ground, Papp waited for him and they adjusted their effort to take half-lap pulls. With Papp towing the break through the start-finish into a strong headwind, Wamsley pulled the long, fast backstretch and into the final turn.

Though the work of Haedo and Zwizanski helped keep the pair in sight, eventually the tether broke and the chase group was left to settle for third. In a show of deference to his temporary ally Papp, Wamsley took an extended pull on the final lap before starting his sprint from 300m out. Though they were momentarily dead even as they approached the line, Papp slipped ahead in the final meters and claimed victory.
