Riders battle weather & each other

On Sunday, August 3, Redline Racing, Ltd. held the 2003 Wood Dale Criterium and ABR Illinois State Criterium Championships in the shadow of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. The day's schedule included all categories of racing, including many different age group categories for Masters riders. While the morning races were run in calm and sunny conditions, dark and ominous clouds moved in during the Masters 30+ race, the day's third-to-final event. Approximately halfway through this event driving rain and strong winds caused a number of these riders to decide that they would fight their battle on another day as they pulled out of the race. The atrocious conditions became worse for the Category 4 event before subsiding a bit for the day's main event, the Men's Category 1,2,3 race.

The Category 1,2,3 race began in a drizzle and concluded with the sun peaking through at times. Nevertheless, the entire race was run on slippery and greasy roads. Taking advantage of these conditions, Higher Gear's Derek Witte attacked from the start, knowing that turns 1 and 2 provided the only technical challenges on the course. As Joshua Carter joined him, the two riders quickly opened up a gap on the rest of the field with Higher Gear's Chris Fabri and Todd Hancock keeping things together at the front of the main pack. Throughout the first half of the race, Carter powered up the gentle rise of turns 3 and 4 to increase the breakaway's lead over the main field.

No organized chase materialized in response to these attacks, yet racers from the Village Cyclesport/Corkill Insurance cycling team repeatedly attacked and counterattacked. Adam Lesniakowski's hard work approximately 20 minutes into the 60-minute plus five lap event formed a promising breakaway of three riders as teammate Jason Klein joined the Higher Gear riders in their patrol at the head of the main bunch, yet even this group, which never gained more than 15 second, slid back into the group. Lesniakowski's escape was followed by a strong counterattack by his powerful teammate, Dan Verner, and Klein attacked as Verner came back, but the day's outcome had been set as no one else was going to escape.

After a great deal of hard work by Josh Carter, Witte and Carter lapped the group and moved straight to the front of the peloton. Each attempted to break away once again, but as the Village Cyclesport riders had already discovered, the field was not going to allow anyone else to escape. Realizing that, Witte cajoled his teammates to the front of the bunch to keep the pace high for the last ten laps of the race, and throughout most of this period, Carter kept himself firmly placed on Witte's wheel as other riders fought for position behind.

As the field sprinted for the line, Witte used his skills from the velodrome to move clear of the pack and win the field sprint, the race, and the ABR Illinois State Championship. As the riders cooled down, tempers heated up. Carter felt that he had powered the break back to the field, and he claimed following the race that Witte had promised him the victory if they lapped the field. Witte, on the other hand, reminded Carter and other riders that racing tactics dictated that he use his strength to provide his teammates with the best possible result. Either way, the race proved exciting for those fans that had braved the stormy weather.
