Results and Reports from the USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Lincoln Plating Spring Classics - Tour de LakeBranched Oak Lake, Raymond, NE, April 12, 2003Kaos at the Tour De Lake135 Riders Take Part in First Road Race of the SeasonBy John Lefler Cat. 1/2/3After two tough weekends of racing at Pioneer-Roubaix and the Bazaar RR in Kansas, the members of NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos Cycling were determined to reassert themselves atop the Cat. 1/2/3 ranks. Taking matters into his own hands, Chris Spence along with his NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos teammates swept the top four spots at the Tour De Lake Road Race on saturday afternoon at Branched Oak Lake. The event was slated to go 77-miles, but due to some unfortunate accidents in the Collegiate Races it was abbreviated to 55-miles. Not wasting anytime, Spence and the members of Team Kaos set a brisk pace as the contest turned north out of Liebers Point. Attacking early, Spence rode off the front with Jeff Luedtke (Husker Road Club) and opened a gap of 3:00 before being reeled in by the peloton. However, numbers were on the side of Team Kaos as Spence and teammate Joe McWilliams paced to a 1-2 finish followed fellow NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos members Marco Vasquez and Darin Schlake. Despite being outnumbered, Marc Walter (CCRT/Photo Shoppe) displayed his strong early season form snatching fifth place. Cat. 4If you have paid attention during last months LBC Criterium Training Series, it was probably no surprise that Nebraska Cycling Club rider Scott Marble won the sprint in the Cat. 4 event saturday. Throughout the training races, Scott showed he was one of the strongest in the field and the man to beat heading into the Haymarket Park Criterium on April 26th. Kris Epps of the Husker Road Club made an impressive season debut in second followed by third place finisher Chad Headlee (LBC/Highgear) who continues to post impressive results this year. Cat. 5The day's largest field featured some talented riders poised to move out of the Cat. 5 ranks. Jon Randell (Ahamo Cycling) matched his first place at Pioneer-Roubaix with another strong outing at the Tour de Lake and is the obvious favorite for the Haymarket Park Criterium. LBC/Highgear rider, Brian Luciani snagged another podium spot for his team with a strong ride just edging Mike Melton of the newly formed team, Ciao Baby Cycling. Masters 30+Everyone wants that solo breakaway victory, but it is rarely possible on the Branched Oak Lake course. Well, apparently Mark Brackenbury (Nebraska Cycling Club) doesn't know because he powered his way to an impressive first place finish ahead of teammate Greg Shimonek who won the field sprint behind. Jon Nelson rounded out the top three with a storming ride in his season debut. Masters 40+Ron Nelson and Eric Buhs of Revolution Cycling/AG Edwards took their teams only poduim finishes of the day in the 44-mile Masters 40+ event. Husker Road Club member Jim Reitman filled out the 40+ podium in third. WomenA lack of women participants turned the Women's events into an impromptu time trial. Nevertheless, Marie Neville (NHS/UNMC/Team Kaos Cycling) and Elizabeth Wooster made the most of their time and motored around the 11.2 mile loop to complete their respective events. Collegiate EventsSaturday's race was run in conjunction with the UNL sponsored collegiate event, which saw 66 collegiate racers from 8 schools and 4 states. The teams included: UNL, Kansas State University, Kansas Univeristy, University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University, Concordia (MN), Carleton, and the University of Minnesota. Special thanksA very special thank you to the sponsors of the "Tour De Lake." The 2003 Lincoln Plating Spring Cycling Classics continue next weekend with XC MTB #2 at Branched Oak Lake, Area 7 on Saturday and concludes with the Haymarket Park Criterium on Saturday, April 26th.
