Gavazzi beats Haedo brothers in cagey sprint for the leaders jersey

The final sprint of the first stage of the Tour de San Luis was sparked by controversy over dicey tactics that saw Italian sprinter Mattia Gavazzi (Diquigiovanni) steal the show from Argentinean brothers Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank) and Sebastian Haedo (Colavita/Sutter Home).

"I know the finish was a little dangerous but I'm used to that and it's normal in sprinting," Gavazzi said about the protests placed against his rapid line change during the final sprint.

UCI officials discussed the tactic and decided to let the original results stand. "But I'm really happy to get the first victory of the season for my team Diquigiovanni, it's beautiful. I have to thank my team because they did a really good job for me today and I was were I needed to be in the last three kilometres."

As predicted, the flat opening stage finished with a sprinter, Gavazzi, taking the celeste leader's jersey. He is followed by runner-up Juan Jose Haedo four seconds back. Third place went to the event's best young rider and best sprinter, Argentinean Josue Moyano, who is sitting five-seconds back. The 19-year old picked up five precious seconds and five extra points at the intermediate sprints during his lengthy 120 kilometre breakaway.

Three riders split from the field and maintained a nearly four minute lead over the peloton for more than 130 kilometres. The breakaway riders included Moyano, Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) and Jesus Rosendo (Andalucía-Cajasur). After their courageous and exhausting effort, their advantage diminished as the sprinters' teams rallied for position in pursuit of a stage victory.

With five kilometres to the finish line, Saxo Bank took a firm hold on the front of the peloton. They were closely followed by the Argentinean national team but both squads were overtaken by Colavita-Sutter Home with three kilometres to go. "My team did a great job today," said the elder Haedo who won the stage last year.

"They brought me up to the front but there was a crash with three kilometres to go and I lost two of my riders," he continued. "Kirk O'Bee from Bissell had a good run and I got on his wheel. Gavazzi went by but I was stuck a little behind O'Bee. When I tried to pass Gavazzi he swung all the way to the right which is something that you are not supposed to do but that's not up to me."

According to the younger Sebastian Haedo, getting a stage win at the Tour of San Luis would be a great way to start the season, especially as the squad heads into the Tour of California. "My whole team was with me today," said Haedo. "Every rider was apart of the lead out and they left me exactly where I wanted to be, on my brother's wheel. It's too bad we couldn't pull off a victory today but I think we did a good job and there are more days."

Argentina's mid-day heat weighed on the 150 international cyclist who lined up at the start of the fourth annual Tour of San Luis held in Argentina. The 22 teams, mixed of ProTour, professional continental, continental and national squads, started in front of the government white house to kick of the seven-day stage race.

Last year the riders began with a short prologue but this year the peloton embarked on a flat 170-kilometre road race, heading towards Justo Daract before finishing in Villa Mercedes.

Upon the completion of a seven kilometre neutral start, Mexican national team rider Bernardo Colex took advantage of his fresh legs and soloed away from bunch. He was quickly joined by Italian Alessandro Proni (Team ISD) and Luis Sepulveda (Chile).

The long distance ahead of them looked appetizing to fifteen more riders who wanted to represent their teams in the early move, including 2006 Giro d'Italia winner Ivan Basso (Liquigas). However, Basso gaining time on several other strong GC teams did not bode well for the breakaway and it was quickly brought back.

A second break of three riders fled the field that included Bissell's powerful time trialist Ben Jacques-Maynes, Jesus Rosendo (Andalucía-Cajasur) and the young Josue Moyano (Argentina U23). Jacques-Maynes took the full mountain points on La Cumbre, located only twenty kilometres into the stage to capture the first king of the mountains jersey. As the riders gained more than a minute on the field, they were joined by two more, Omar Cervantes (Mexico) and Pablo Pintos (Uruguay). Pintos took a flat tyre that eliminated him from the lead group a few kilometres later.

"I'm not going to try to keep the jersey, it was a one time thing," said Jacques- Maynes. "I didn't even want to ride the break today, that's what you get for trying."

The four riders continued to plow through the moderate headwind on what turned into an all-day affair with one long, straight road. They gained more than three minutes on the peloton before the forty kilometre marker. A moment of excitement arrived at the first intermediate sprint sign, located fifty kilometres into the stage. The young Argentinean Moyano took full points followed closely by Jacques-Maynes and Cervantes.

"It was pure cross-winds today, but all in all I had a good chance to see the countryside," Jacques-Maynes said regarding the 130-kilometre long haul down the Autopista. "I felt like I was riding on the rollers today and I got excited when I saw the first curve in the road when we got to Justo Daract. It was all about getting a tan on one side on the way out and then a tan on the other side on the way back. I think my teammates were marinating back in the bunch."

Almost out of nowhere, Luis Bravo (Chile) successfully bridged across to the leaders and graciously sat in for several kilometres in order to catch his breath. The five riders rotated and took even pulls in the headwind. However, some action from the peloton brought the hefty gap down from four minutes to one minute within twenty kilometres.

Most of the efforts came from the South American national teams from Argentina, Uruguay and Cuba. When it looked like field was reeling in the escapees, the separation steadily grew back up to four minutes. The cause was a combination of Jacques-Maynes testing his time trial legs on the front of his group and the dissipating fireworks back in the field. The five rider break was reduced to four and then three when both Cervantes and Bravo had two untimely flat tyres.

"It was a good break and a good group of guys," Jacques-Maynes said. "I tried to do a couple of motivational speeches but I don't speak Spanish. I attacked a couple of times and that got the message across. I guess when you want to go faster you just ride faster." Jacques-Maynes won the second intermediate sprint located at kilometre 127, the accumulated points tied up with Moyano for the sprint jersey lead.

The American diesel engine continued to put pressure on the break after the sprint, an effort that shed Moyano. With only two riders left in the break and a strong cross-headwind back to the finish line, the break did not look promising.

Teams with strong sprinters rallied to find one another with forty kilometres to go, which caused the gap to fall to within thirty seconds.

Liquigas had a strong presence at the front all day, mainly in an attempt to stay away from mishap. Basso did not drift back further than fifteenth wheel from start to finish. The national teams from Argentina, Uruguay and Chile found themselves at the front a little too early with twenty kilometres to go. Teams with the most to gain from a sprint finish jockeyed for position in the last five kilometres.

The race came down to a tactical sprint as each team with a strong sprinter reshuffled at the front with three kilometres to the line. Saxo Bank, Diquigiovanni, Colavita-Sutter Home, Fuji-Servetto and Bissell were amongst the lead out trains down to the finish barreling to the line.
