Scody Cup Tour of Tasmania - NEAustralia, September 30-October 5, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - September 30: Devonport Day, 33kmHoward continues to impressBy Rod Morris In Latrobe Starting with a 30-lap criterium in East Devonport, Geelong teenage sensation Leigh Howard continued his assault on the Australian domestic cycling scene and in particular the Scody Cup, which is the National road series. Howard took the morning stage by a bike length from New South Welshman Joel Pearson and talented South Australian Russell Gill. But Bernard Sulzberger moved into the prized yellow jersey as tour leader after picking up nine intermediate sprint bonus points – which equates to nine seconds off his overall time. Howard wasn't concerned with the intermediate sprints, instead preserving his energy for the run to the finish line to clinch his ninth race in Scody Cup history. Under previous banners – the Tattersall's Cup and the Timbercorp Cup – the national road series dates back to 1996 and Howard's nine race victories draws him level in second place with 2000 Sydney gold medal Olympian Brett Aitken, but still a massive eight wins behind 1992 Barcelona Olympian Robert McLachlan. Howard is unlikely to catch McLachlan in the immediate future, as his future – whether it be on road or track looks destined for greener pastures in Europe. Howard has an unbelievable turn of speed, particularly when the finish line is in sight – as Pearson, Gill, Sulzberger and company found out. Sulzberger is trying to emulate the performance of his younger brother Wesley, who won the series two years ago. After winning the Tour of Gippsland in August and producing some consistent performances since, he remains Howard's biggest threat and would like nothing more than to win the series on home soil this week.
