Riding in his home town, Latrobe's Nathan Clarke became the success story of the opening day of the Caterpillar Underground Mining Tour of Tasmania. Clarke won the second stage – a 54.9-km criterium, which started in East Devonport but finished with 30 laps of a street circuit less than 500 m from his home and from the famous Latrobe Oval – scene of the time honoured Latrobe Wheelrace, which Clarke won four years ago.

The opening two stages of the six day Tour of Tasmania was full of drama, excitement, power, tactics, classical racing and yet another unveiling of Australia's rich cycling stocks.

The afternoon stage from East Devonport to Latrobe was well out of the norm for races in this series. The riders were under "control" for the first nine km along the banks of the Mersey River before reaching the criterium line in Latrobe where the gun was re-fired signaling a hectic 30 laps of full on racing.

With 11 intermediate sprints positioned in the criterium to reward those who wanted to set the pace, stage 2 became an absolute cracker. Young Victorian Pat Shaw was chasing both sprint championship points and the all important time bonuses that went with it for General Classification honours.

Whilst Shaw didn't feature in every sprint, he made those around him aware of his presence and by the end of the stage had drawn level with previous sprint leader Bernard Sulzberger and in fact had the jersey courtesy of a countback.

Again Leigh Howard was concentrating on the "bigger" picture – GC and the yellow jersey. He wanted to win another stage, but there was a rather large imposing figure in his way – Nathan Clarke.

Clarke wanted so much to win the stage in his home town and he wasn't go to let any "mainland upstart" get in his way. In a tremendously tight finish, Clarke held Howard out by the barest possible margin and on-course photographers who captured the finished all had differing opinions – and images - to suggest the result could have gone either way. It was Clarke's fourth victory in Scody Cup history and third this season, making him the 11th most successful rider since 1996

Third home was South Australia's mountain biker Chris Jongewaard, while Sulzberger's fifth placing, left him 3-seconds in arrears of Howard on GC.

Howard (18) started this tour with 181 points amassed from the already completed Tour of Gippsland, Australian Grand Prix (Ballarat) and Tour of the Murray River. He held an 18-point lead to Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger and a further 4-points to Clarke.

By the end of the opening day, those margins had been stretched to 24 and 31 respectively.

The tour continues on Wednesday with a unique criterium around the sports grounds of Marist College in Burnie and an afternoon road race from Burnie to Sulphur Creek over a distance of 71.4 km. The tour will climax on Sunday in Westbury.
