113th Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic - 1.2Victoria, Australia, October 25, 20082007 Results Results Past winners Dempster takes another big winBy Rod Morris in Warrnambool At his first attempt Zak Dempster (VIS-Jayco) won one of Australia's most prestigious road races the 2008 Shotz Sports Nutrition Melbourne to Warrnambool. Dempster won in a six-up sprint, after more than seven hours in the saddle. For the event Hilton Clarke had joined him as a VIS-Jayco teammate. Clarke ended up in second place. Third home was David Pell, who has a string of strong placings in the event, but has yet to achieve the ultimate. Dempster has achieved a lot in his short but growing international cycling career, including winning the Bendigo Madison and time honoured Austral Wheelrace on the track and the Australian Grand Prix Time Trial and Tour of Gippsland on the road. Over 299km, the "Warrny" is the world's longest one day race and UCI recognition on an international scale and Dempster was well aware of the event's background. "Until now, I wasn't sure whether I was good enough to win the race and also, I had not had the opportunities to race," he said. "But I'm glad I entered, I now realise how tough the race is and what it can do to some riders." Dempster wasn't sure if he'd return. "I might leave it there, one from one sounds nice." Clarke won the Melbourne to Warrnambool in 2000 and was trying to join elite company as a dual winner of the great race, which again attracted a big audience in the famed Raglan Parade finish. After winning the Australian Grand Prix Road Race in Ballarat earlier this year and the Grafton to Inverell one day classic last month, Pell looked a good bet yesterday, particularly over the final 20km, when the field had broken up considerably. Race organisers were thrilled with the response of 205 entries, a record field since the event became a mass start in 1996. Leisurely startRiders were able to enjoy the first eight kilometres of the race, as it was neutralise from the start at Sanctuary Lakes where they were to enjoy the scenery. But as soon as the red flag was pulled in at Point Cook, the demeanour of most riders took on a distinctly different look. Some were hell-bent on picking up some of the intermediate sprints, which carried a $100 bonus each time, while others were happy to sit back in the field and dream of getting to the finish line in Warrnambool. By the time the field had reached Werribee for the third sprint, a group of four riders had already formed with Adrian Hanson, Luke MacKenzie, Andrew Ward and Peter Ladd. Shortly after Adelaide-based Joel Pearson was able to get across from the peloton, but at the same time, MacKenzie had lost touch. At the Werribee sprint, Port Fairy rider Damien McDowell, got tangled up with some other riders and crashed heavily, resulting in a trip to the nearest hospital. The new four-man group settled down and for the next nine intermediate sprints and four hill climbs boosted their bank balances with some handy pocket money. By now, the leaders were almost to the Colac Otway region, some 123km into the race. Hanson had been the dominant figure in the intermediate sprints and it wasn't long after that he withdrew from the race. Hanson however had not read the fine print on this year's technical regulations, stipulating that riders in contention for either the Sprint Championship or King of the Mountain Championship, must cross the finish line. But the blow to Hanson was softened when he learnt he was still able to take home the $1200 in sprint prize money he'd collected. The Victorian 200km Championship was included in the Melbourne to Warrnambool and decided outside the Mamre Hotel at Pirron Yallock. Winner was one of the most unlikely choices if betting was legal on the race in Tasmanian 40-year-old Tim Elmer, who pushed his nose in front of fellow Tasmanian, Richie Porte at the right time. There was more mayhem at the Camperdown sprint, or at least the feed station which was only 200m further on. Drapac Porsche rider Pip Grinter who at the time was in a new lead group of 17 riders got tangled up with a handful of spectators and officials who were trying to offer feed bags to others. Down he crashed and his day in the saddle was over. With the finish line nearing, Elmer, Shaun McCarthy and Brendan Rowbotham became the next casualties of the lead group and their target switched from race victory to survival and just getting to the finish line in one piece. At Panmure, some 25km from the finish, a six-man group, comprising Dempster, Hilton Clarke, Pell, Cameron Jennings, Dylan Newell and Casey Munro, were able to break clear from Jonathon Clarke, Tom Leaper, Cameron Hughes, Will Dickeson, Richie Porte and Leon Vogels and that's the order the top dozen finished, but not before some more drama over the closing stages. The finish straight at Warrnambool is picturesque for the spectators and they were able to see the power of Dempster over the last 200m in particular. Newell looked to have the race in his pocket when he hit out first, but then Dempster and Hilton Clarke turned on the gas. It was a finish to remember and the name Zak Dempster joins an honour roll that embodies everything about Australian cycling. Dempster will now switch his road bike for his track machine and prepare for next month's World Cup, while he will turn his attention back to the road for the Australian Open in Ballarat in January. And in a feel good story about yesterday's "Warrny" Dempster's father Darren, who was also competing in his first major road classic, won the D Grade category.
