6th Mount Hood Classic - NE/2.2WOregon, USA, May 13-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 5 - May 18: Downtown Hood River Criterium, 75/50 minutesSprinters delight in Mt. Hood finaleBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Hood River, Oregon Pinfold plays sprint to pefection, Sutherland retains yellowThe final criterium for the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic was a technical and challenging course that featured a nasty downhill, 180 degree sweeping turn and an uphill finish. The race was aggressive at the start before the Health Net-Maxxis team allowed an acceptable breakaway to escape. Then it was ride the front to the finish with yellow jersey Rory Sutherland in tow. Out of the breakaway it was Canadian Andrew Pinfold (Symmetrics) who was the best tactician in the break, making dangerous sprinter Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United) lead out the final turn and then coming around him up the middle for the win. "I think my tires had too much pressure because I was skidding around the corners, so I took a few primes as insurance," Pinfold said. "On the last corner I skipped my tire and just said to myself, 'Aw, take it easy'. So I had to make up a gap, but I held it straight along the far line and the barricades just came over." "I attacked with four corners to go but they closed the gap and just stood on my wheel," Stevic told Cyclingnews. "Then I went again from the last corner. Stevic was the farthest along the curb after exiting the turn, and the finish barricades were set at an angle that closed the door on him. "The race officials saw no problem with the sprint as Pinfold held a straight line coming around the B world champion all the way to the line," he added. Coming in behind was the Health Net-Maxxis team, led by US crit champion Kirk O'Bee, who would normally be salivating at a course like this. "We were kinda thinking about it last night but it was just safer the way it played out and more important to protect the overall," O'Bee said regarding going for a stage win. O'Bee was the perfect bodyguard all day, escorting the race leader around every turn. "It was difficult getting the group away because everyone wants their piece of the pie," said Sutherland about the early laps. "Then it calmed down with the break and then it was fairly simple," O'Bee agreed. "We had our three guys to watch- Jacques-Maynes, [Darren] Lill and [Michael] Creed - you just don't let them up the road." At one point Bissell's Ted King jumped out of the field to bridge to the break, with Health Net-Maxxis' Matt Crane immediately on his wheel. But once it made sure the rider was not Jacques-Maynes, Health Net-Maxxis relented and King crossed the gap. This made Pinfold a little nervous about other teams wanting to protect their general classification spots. "I was a little apprehensive when Ted King came up," said Pinfold. "I knew he was close on the GC so I thought that might screw things up. And I was outnumbered. But I said I will do my work and not shirk any pulls, but also not overextend myself." Oregonian Doug Ollerenshaw made the break as well, and clinched his sprint jersey with the help of team-mate David Clinger. Sutherland said he was never in doubt that the team would protect his lead, reminding him of his other stage race win last week in Arkansas. "Our guys were amazing this week," he said. "And there is a reason the guys are in second and third, they are good climbers - so it would be hard for them to get away here. Especially with the group of guys that we have on a technical course like this. It is just like Joe Martin last week." Pic sweeps the crits, Beveridge wins yellowTina Pic (Colavita-Sutter Home) got her usual call-up to the line as reigning United States of America Criterium Champion in the criterium final stage, but as the final rider called to the line, there was just not enough room for her with the other notable riders. And her second row starting position became worse when the rider in front of her could not clip into her pedal. But despite starting virtually at the back, and on a course with barely a place to pass, she got to the front and once again proved she is the best sprinter in the women's peloton - taking her second win of the week. "I was the last one they called up and I couldn't make it through," Pic laughed after the race. "And then somebody couldn't get into her pedal and I ended up behind her. It was totally technical and a lot harder to move up. I just could not move up, and I was feeling so crummy today." With one lap to go the problems continued as the leading rider thought the race was over, posting up and smiling huge. This then put Pic on the front in the wind- not the place to be for the final lap. But team-mate Tiffany Cromwell came to her rescue again. "I knew it was two to go and I was wondering why she was going so hard - and then she put her arms up and we were like, 'Ahhhh!'," said Pic. "But then it was like, 'Somebody come through!'. But then Tiff came through for me - again!" Order was restored for the next half lap until the always dangerous Jeannie Longo (River City Bikes) attacked, trying to spoil the field sprint. "Jeannie went with like three [turns] to go and I was like, 'Oh, I guess she is going for it!'," said Pic. "But Jo[anne Kiesanowski] got on her and I got on Jo." Behind the winners the excitement continued as race leader Julie Beveridge (Aaron's) lost control of her front wheel and slid out in the final turn. But despite the crash she will always have good memories of the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic. "This race last year was my first ever stage race, I had just started racing," said Beveridge. "To come back here and have the yellow jersey the next year is pretty amazing. "On the last corner I came around and the next thing I knew I was sliding on the ground," she added. "My front wheel was just gone. But my team is awesome, they kept me safe all day... well until then!"
