6th Mount Hood Classic - NE/2.2WOregon, USA, May 13-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Prologue - May 13: Portland Prologue, 1.7 milesKiesanowski, Jacques-Maynes win Mt. Hood openerBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Portland, Oregon Kiwis ladies dominate Mt. Hood prologueFor the first time ever, the Mt. Hood Classic held an opening prologue in downtown Portland, coinciding with the new UCI rating for the women's race. The short and flat, 2.74-kilometre out-and-back course paralleling the riverfront of this bicycle-friendly city was a specialist's course – and two New Zealand riders with track cycling backgrounds came out on top. Kiwi Joanne Kiesanowski (TIBCO) put in the fastest time just ahead of Alison Shanks of the New Zealand-based Jazz Apple team. "I've had a couple of good prologues in the past, so I knew if I prepared well I might be able to do it," Kiesanowski told Cyclingnews. This is only her second race in the States, having raced over in Europe the past few seasons. Kiesanowski said she is enjoying her racing here and is hoping that these races will prepare her for the Olympics. "I was impressed with Gila last week and this too will be great preparation for me for the Olympics – all this climbing and hilly courses is great preparation for the course in Beijing." Three-time defending champion Leah Goldstein (ValuAct Capital) finished easily within reach of the leaders at just seven seconds behind. "This is not the course for me, short and flat. I just did not want to lose too much time, and it is only seven seconds whereas in the hills others can lose half an hour." While she is easily a race favourite she does recognize that the upgrade to UCI status means the chances of a four-peat have become much more difficult. "The field is super hard this year, it's not like it was the past three years." However, last year she won with just one teammate and this year she has an entire team around her. "With the calibre here you need a team. I was lying on the ground for quite some time last year, and I'll probably be lying on the ground again this year!" she said regarding the finish of the tough mountain top finish stage. "But I'll have a lot of teammates to help carry me to the car!" Making an appearance this year is the US road champion Mara Abbott (High Road) riding for a composite team with her teammate Kim Anderson. "This was my first NRC race I ever did so it has a little special place in my heart," she said. "We don't have our whole team here but Kim and I are really lucky that the organizers were great to put together a composite team for us." Another rider of note is Jeanie Longo who finished 15th today. The 50 year-old former world and French champion is racing along side, and beating women half her age. Jacques-Maynes alone on topWith only 2.74-kilometre total distance to cover, it is difficult to find much time separation in the opening prologue... except at the very top. Bissell's Ben Jacques-Maynes bested the rest of the field by three seconds – a margin that spanned second through sixteenth places behind him. "I seem to be pretty good at these shorter events, any prologue really. Just find a big gear and go at it quickly," he said, regarding the 54x11 ratio he was rolling. Jacques-Maynes finished second in last year's prologue and finished third overall behind Phil Zajicek. With no defending champion, these two are easily race favourites. However, while Zajicek finished a few seconds down today, the real racing does not start until Friday's individual time trial – a stage where he put 34 seconds into Jacques-Maynes. "That is all I care about," said Zajicek about the time trial. "Today is good but it is definitely not my specialty. I expected Jacques-Maynes to go really fast but I also expect to take time out of him on the time trial and on the mountain top finish as well. I'm feeling healthy and we have a really strong team here to help me." But Jacques-Maynes is also feeling confident, saying he has a stronger team than last year and coming off two big climbing races. "I just did Georgia and Gila which is about as much climbing as you can get back-to-back. I know these climbs pretty well so I am looking forward to this week." Beyond being a specialist at the short prologue races, Jacques-Maynes said he had a little extra motivation today. "The guys here were asking me to win it for the circuit tomorrow. It is supposed to be pretty tight and they wouldn't mind being on the front for that! So I obliged them." For much of the day the best time was held by BMC's Jonathan Garcia, who is relatively new to the top ranks. "I finished and just kept rolling to do a little ride around the downtown," he said, not even thinking about his time. "I didn't even know until I got back! I was hoping [it would hold,] it would have been the best result of my career so far – it still is with second place!" Tomorrow's first actual stage is a tough and twisty criterium circuit course on the site of an extinct volcano in downtown Portland, called Mt. Tabor. There is 135-feet of climbing every 1.3-mile lap, so a new race leader could easily emerge.
