Tour of Arkansas - NEUSA, May 15-18, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 16:Chadwick takes two on key climbBy Kirsten Robbins in Russellville, Arkansas Glen Chadwick (Team Type 1) continued his strong form with a second consecutive stage at the Tour of Arkansas today. This time the New Zealander took a gratifying victory atop the queen stage's Mount Nebo ahead of Predrag Prokic (Toshiba-Santo) and Michael Lang (Jelly Belly). Chadwick furthered his overall lead in the Tour with an additional five seconds in time bonuses picked up on the line. "It was a lot harder than I thought it would be," said Chadwick of Mount Nebo's 18 percent average gradient and more than 20 switchbacks. "I thought it was just a couple of switch back followed by some flatter bits and then a couple more switch backs. But it was just switchback after switchback. It was a nasty little climb and I know what to expect next time I'm here that's for sure." Team Type 1 began the 160 kilometre stage with the intention of controlling the race from start-to-finish, to bring race leader Chadwick into Mount Nebo with fresh legs. But the responsibility transferred over to Toshiba-Santo after it failed to take part in an early break of 12 riders who rode away over Mount Petite Jean, the first of the three climbs. The well-represented break away became unorganized when several teams made a tactical decision to sit in and conserve their energy. Third place on the day Lang admitted that his Jelly Belly squad was one of several team's taking the free ride. "The first break could've gone far because I think every one was in it and we had three riders there too," said Lang. "But we decided not to work in it because our two best climbers were still in the field. "It ended up working out well because our guys up there were able to sit in and stay fresh and we lucked out and Toshiba and Mercy Cycling chased it down," he added. Team Toshiba's lack of representation in the initial break forced it to pull it back before the start of the second climb. "I have to thank my team for doing such good work today," said Serbian Prokic. "It was really hard today and they had to pull back one serious break away that got away between the first and second climb. "It was a pretty hard climbing because it was so steep and my team put me in good position again before the start of the last climb," he added. "I tried to follow the moves and it was hard but I was able to do it." Aaron Tuckerman (Jelly Belly) went clear of the field while descending Mount Petite Jean, almost immediately after the return of the initial break. Tuckerman dangled two-minutes in front of Team Type 1's train for more than 40 kilometers, later joined by Mark Walter's (Team RACE). "My team set the tempo up all the climbs to deter anyone from attacking us," said Chadwick, who admitted to allowing breaks to take flight on the flats where small time gaps were more easily controlled. "After the second climb Moises Aldape and I were very comfortable in the group. They kept the break away in check until Mount Nebo. It was a great team effort." Team Type 1 increased the pace in order to capture Tuckerman on the way toward the finale daunting six-kilometre climb. "I attacked straight through the steep section on the first hair pin turn, immediately there were four of us," said Chadwick. The group of four riders included Chadwick, team-mate Aldape, Prokic and Lang. "Aldape rode a hard tempo so I could just sit back," explained Chadwick. "I attacked again over one of the flatter sections and Prokic bridged across but he didn't want to work with me." Lang chose to ride the steep sections of Mount Nebo at his own tempo. He left the vicious attacking to the other three until the one kilometre remaining mark when he sensed a lull in the action and Aldape fell off pace. "I couldn't really respond to their surges so I caught up to them on the next section of steep climbing and I tried to attack then," said Lang. "It didn't go very far and it burned me a little bit. I just tried to limit my losses in the last few hundred metres after that effort." Prokic led the chase to catch Lang, allowing Chadwick to plan his winning move. "I left it up to Prokic to pull us to the line," said Chadwick. "I saw a bend in the road with a hundred metres to go [so] I put it in a decent size gear and jumped. Prokic couldn't come with me so I thought 'oh beauty I won anther one'." The men will be challenged to a second mountain-top finish at the end of tomorrow's 160 kilometre Stage 3. Prokic hopes to challenge Chadwick for the leader's jersey on tomorrow's 16 kilometre ascent of Mount Magazine. "I know it is going to be difficult but we hope to be able to move up one more place on GC after tomorrow's stage," he said.
