Tour of Pennsylvania - 2.2USA, June 24-29, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - June 28: Ligonier to Pittsburgh, 91mi / 146kmFrench Canadians astound Pittsburgh as Veilleux steals yellowBy Kirsten Robbins in Pittsburgh French-Canadians team-mates David Veilleux and Keven LaCombe (Kelley Benefit Strategies-Medifast) left Pittsburgh crowds stunned when they claimed an impressive one-two by six seconds. The duo emerged out of the final bend on today's Stage 5 with a sizeable lead, taking the top places while American Phil Gaimon (Fiordifrutta) sprinted to third place from the main bunch. "We new we had a chance to surprise everyone and planned to have Keven and I jump together in the last part of the circuits," said Montreal's David Veilleux, who was sitting one second behind South African Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta) going into stage five. "The peloton caught almost all of the break away riders on the last lap of the finishing circuit and we decided that with one kilometre to go we were going to jump and try to get a gap on the field." Gaimon admitted be was disappointed when he realised he had not sewn up the stage win. "I didn't want to get caught by the field so I attacked the break on the last lap and got a gap," said Gaimon. "Somehow they came out of the field, but once I saw who it was I wasn't surprised at all because those two guys have been tearing it up all week." Both Veilleux and LaCombe crossed the victory line together, applauding one another for their cagey tactics. The team's moved has put Veilleux into the yellow leader's jersey, five seconds ahead of the previous leader Van Heerden and 11 seconds ahead of American Stefano Barberi (Z-Team). "It feels great to have the leader's jersey and this was our plan since our meeting in the morning," said Veilleux, who also claimed the green sprinters' jersey with his efforts. "Keven and I understand each other very well and we like to work together." As the green and gold clad team displayed tactical prowess on the finishing circuits, Van Heerden found himself at the back of the bunch with one lap to go. "I worked my way back up to the front after a puncture, which took a lot of work, for what I though was the sprint finish," said Van Heerden, who miscalculated the number of remaining laps. "I finished toward the back of the group and by that point it was too late and I wasn't in the right position to respond to the Kelly riders." How it unfoldedThe Tour of Pennsylvania's penultimate stage was set to challenge the international Under 25 field, with 8000 feet of climbing between the start city of Latrobe and the finish in Pittsburg. The finishing stages are tied to the 250th anniversary celebration of the founding of the city of Pittsburgh in 1758, upon the conclusion of General John Forbes and the young George Washington's Forbes Trail Expedition. The route followed a mostly rolling course with one short King of the Mountains climb at kilometre 35. The climb was made obsolete by Peter Stetina's (VMG-Felt) insurmountable lead of the climber's competition, which he wrapped up on the previous stage. The early kilometres also presented the sprinters with one last intermediate hot spot at kilometre 60, on the outskirts of Latrobe. American Chance Nobel (California Giant Berry Farms) scooped up the full points during his solo break away, which gained an advantage of nearly two minutes on the field. A second and more threatening breakaway of three riders let loose on the second half of the stage. The group included Dylan Newell (Praties), former race leader Steven Van Vooren (Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy) and South African Travis Allen (Konica Minolta). "I knew having Van Vooren in the break was good because he has been riding really well here," said Newell. However when the break gained more than two minutes on the peloton, Van Vooren became the virtual leader on the road, which forced a frantic chase from behind. The leading general classification team Konica-Minolta received help from other teams also vying for the classification lead like VMG-Felt, Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast and the Z team to bring the group back. All bets were off approaching the finishing circuits, where the chase reduced threatening advantage to a more manageable 15 seconds. Three more Americans - Sheldon Deeny (Sakonnet Technology), Caleb Fairly (VMG) and Gaimon - bridged to the leading trio on the start of the first of three finishing laps. "It was pretty tough out there with really strong head winds," said Newell. "I thought they would let us hang out there for a while, but I didn't think it would stay away until the last lap of the finishing circuits." Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast began what was considered an early lead-out in pursuit of the breakaway and then the stage victory. "Our planned jut happened to work out today," said Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast director Jonas Carney. "The one card we have is that we have an enormous amount of power amongst the guys on the team." The Tour of Pennsylvania will resume on the down town streets of Pittsburgh tomorrow for the finale Stage 6, an 80-kilometre criterium.
