Stage 4 - June 27: Bedford to Latrobe, 59.5mi / 95.76km

Veilleux wins in Latrobe, Van Heerden claims lead

By Kirsten Robbins in Latrobe

Canadian David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) proved to be the fastest on Stage 4, taking a convincing victory ahead of new race leader Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta) and Dutchman Dennis Luyt (Global Cycling). The peloton endured a soaking wet stage, with the sun only coming out at the finish line in Latrobe, where spectators gathered to watch the tricky sprint finale in the down town area.

"There is less than a second between us and so I think tomorrow is going to decide everything," said the French-Canadian stage winner Veilleux. "It was really hard today, constantly up and down even between the two KOM's. The goal today was to stay with the climbers.

"My team has been riding great this week and I am looking forward to the next couple of stages," he added.

The relatively short stage was also considered the toughest of the race. The fourth stage, under 100 kilometres in length, was intended to further open the time gaps between the top GC riders. While the terrain did separate the field, the top overall contenders are still only separated by one second each.

In the end Stage 4 left Van Heerden as the new overall race leader. The South African leads the race overall just one second ahead of Veilleux and American Stefano Barberi (Z Team).

"All I really had to do was sit on at the back of the bunch and keep my eye on Veilleux in the end," said Van Heerden, who also leads the best sprint Competition.

Van Heerden claimed the leading role after gaining more than two minutes over his previous general classification competitors, Belgian's Steven Van Vooren (Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy) and Canadian Keven LaCombe (Kelley Benefit Strategies-Medifast).

"Luckily I was able to stay up front with the climbers today and that is what really helped me," he said. "The rain also might have slowed the peloton down behind us because it was really tricky and winding - giving us a bigger advantage."

How it unfolded

The event's queen stage provided a challenge across Highway 30, the road still considered the gateway between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, over the Allegheny Mountain range. The international Under 25 field climbed over the hardest of all climbs in the event.

Black clouds loomed over the talented peloton as it departed the start in Bedford. Riders rolled out for 24 kilometres before turning upward for a difficult climb to Bald Knob Summit, the first King of the Mountains climb for the day.

Contributions from the VMG-Felt and the Zteam put tension on the field before the base of the first climb. After the previous stage's memorable 65 kilometer solo effort, the climbing classification leader from Boulder, Colorado, Peter Stetina (VMG-Felt) continued to pick up points.

The 21 year-old continued to stretch his legs over the first ascent to form a lead group of four riders. Stetina, determined to claim the stage win his missed out on yesterday, was joined in the group by Stefano Barberi (Z-Team), Dylan Newell (Praties) along with Veilleux, who became the virtual race leader.

A small group of eight additional riders joined the leaders on the descent. The group included usual suspects Luyt, Van Heerden and his team-mate Dennis Niekerk along with Phil Gaimon (Fiordifrutta), Peter Salon and Calob Fairly (VMG-Felt), Alex Welch (Team VRC) and Chad Beyer (Zteam).

Deep into the climbs through the Allegheny Mountains, the peloton continued to follow Highway 30. The road was laid out by General John Forbes and the young George Washington 250 years earlier on the historic Forbes Trail Expedition.

This turning point in American history changed the course of the French and Indian War by capturing the French at Fort Duquesne. The route became the first road in the west, carrying settlers and trade into the interior of the continent by the early 1800s.

The skies opened up on the peloton, dumping buckets of rain when the lead group of 12 riders continued the arduous drudge up hill to crest atop Laurel Hill Summit. Stetina won the second and final KOM over the short but steep three-kilometre climb.

"I think my day to have won the overall would have been," said Stetina. "We still have a strong team for the remaining two stages so, you never know what will happen. I'm happy to have the KOM jersey and I won't have to worry about those points anymore."

The two-minute advantage was reduced to half that as a result of the chasing peloton gaining group on the flatter route to Latrobe. The Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy fought tooth and nail to reduce the gap to the break for its yellow jersey wearer Van Vooren.

However the lead group become animated on sight of the finish line, with five kilometres to go. Third place on general classification Barberi let loose with a series of attacks as he attempted to shed his tired breakaway companions.

"Our goal was to move up on GC by making it hard over the first climb and then to see what happened after that," said Barberi. "I tried to jump coming into the finish, just to try to get a few seconds but it didn't quite work out that way."

Alex Welch (Team VRC) earned himself the most aggressive rider jersey when he gained a several second advantage with four kilometres to go, but too was reeled in before the line by the sprinters.
