Tour of Pennsylvania - 2.2USA, June 24-29, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1b - June 24: Criterium - Philadelphia, 30mi / 50kmHolloway takes crit; Van Vooren keeps yellowBy Kirsten Robbins in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Current US national criterium champion, Daniel Holloway (VMG-Felt) proved he was on good form in the American Eagle Outfitters Tour of Pennsylvania's stage 1B criterium, taking a convincing field sprint win ahead of Jacob Keough (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta Continental). "I think my fitness is better than what I thought it was coming into the race," said Holloway. "It was a huge team effort all the way from the riders to our director Chan McRae and to the mechanics and staff getting our bikes perfect. The team executed on every level from attacking to covering and they really made my job easy – They did their job and I did mine." VMG-Felt organised a timely lead-out for their winning sprinter with three laps to go, a much needed effort to control an aggressive field. A strong performance from the Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast quickly took over the lead in the crucial finale 800 metres. "But the guys came together and put their heads down and stuck it out for me," said Holloway, who got a head start on runner up Keough through the last corner. "They put everything into me and it feels really good that they believed in me that way." By virtue of winning the stage, the young American sprinter kicked off the start of the green jersey point's competition. The precious points are only available at the finish line of each stage. "It is a long race and these are really good U-25 riders," said Holloway. "We have to wait and see how things shape out over the next few stages. A break could go away and take all the points or my guys could do another lead-out to take points. We need to play it by ear for now." There were no time bonuses available during the criterium. Thus, the Belgian prologue specialist Steven Van Vooren (Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy), who finished mid-bunch, maintained his three-second overall lead, set in the morning's three-kilometre time trial, ahead of Keven LaCombe (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta Continental). "I think the race was a little sketchy and I wanted to keep it safe," said race leader Van Vooren, who noted the similarities between the American criterium racing and the Belgian Kermes races. "I'm used to the speed but I was content to just sit in tonight. We tried to hold back and keep the field together. We didn't have to do pretty much. The sprinters did their job and we sat back and let them do their thing." A warm sunny evening welcomed the 120 riders to the start of the stage 1B Philadelphia two-kilometre criterium, to complete 25 laps of a more technical rendition of the morning's three-kilometre prologue. Arguably the most aggressive rider in the bunch, Stefano Barberi (Z Team), led the way in a series of efforts that forced the strength of the fresh faced U-25 peloton to reveal itself. "It's kind of a weird field because there are a lot of riders who are unknown so it was good to test the legs of the other riders just to see who is out there," said Barberi, who admitted to taking multiple chances in lieu of not having a pure sprinter available for the finale. The Konica Minolta Continental team from South Africa proved their strength reacting to many of the early attacks launched from American Team's like the Z-Team, Waste Management, California Giant berry Farms and Sakonnet. Van Heerden landed the third place on the podium in both prologue and criterium. The South African noted that the criterium was more aggressive than he had anticipated, though pleased with his team's participation in the fireworks. "It was really aggressive the whole time and we had to cover a lot of the moves," said Van Heerden. "We were hoping to get a group away but everyone seemed to want it to stay together. So with a couple of laps to go we saw it was going to be a field sprint we decided to sit in and wait for the sprint." Team VMG-Felt became increasingly more active as the criterium progressed to it's final laps, driving the pace with enough speed to cause separations to form in mid-bunch. One team noted as being relatively quiet was Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast who placed two riders in the top five during the morning's time trial. "We were all about the field sprint tonight," said second placed Jacob Keough, who signed with the professional American team last week. "We had our top time trialist at the front in the lead-out, so they were super fast." After returning to the field from a late race breakaway, Holloway and his VMG-Felt squad rallied at the front with three laps to go with its sprinter in tow. "I rode into some moves because we had to cover all aspects of the race. We couldn't afford to let moves go. I went into moves that I thought would stick and put myself in all the fright positions to do well, in the end we did a great lead out and it turned out perfect."
