LaCombe wins break sprint, Van Vooren holds slim lead

Canada's Keven LaCombe (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) blasted through the streets of Carlisle to take the stage two victory after bridging across to the late-race breakaway. LaCombe claimed the stage win over South Africa's Christoff Van Heerden (Konica Minolta) and American Ryan Baumann (Sakonnet Technology).
"The break away went just before the feed zone and no-one from our team was there so that was a very bad situation for us," said LaCombe.
With that in mind LaCombe bridged across to the threatening 15 rider break with team-mate David Veilleux. The Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast duo arrived at the breakaway 20 kilometres before the finish.
"We were only two guys so we tried to follow wheels expecting to do well in the sprint," said LaCombe. "All the guys in the team did a good job in the race today. We arrived to the finish and with 500 meters to go David did a really good job leading me out and all I had to do was the last two hundred meters."
Belgian yellow jersey leader Steven Van Vooren also joined the breakaway late in the game. The situation almost cost Van Vooren his slender lead over of LaCombe and Van Heerden.
"I immediately saw that the break was probably not going to come back," said Van Vooren. "I don't think its wise to panic in a situation like that, so I spoke with my director and we decided to try to get other teams to help chase or work with us."
With no help from his rival teams, Van Vooren took an opportunity to follow LaCombe across to the lead group. "It took a lot of energy to do that bridge because we did it so fast but our main goal was to hang onto the yellow jersey and we succeed," he said.

The top-notch international Under 25 field set off from Downingtown in sunny conditions, with the riders due to finish 144 kilometres later on the streets of Carlisle. The stage took riders through the Lancaster County's Amish country, where it travelled through rolling terrain and smooth roads.
Stage winner LaCombe accumulated enough points in intermediate sprint competitions held in nearby cities Ephrata and Hershey, combined with the extra points offered on the finish line, to take over the best sprinter lead.
"We didn't really expect to win the points jersey, but I won one of the intermediate sprints and then with the end of the race victory I got it," said LaCombe. "Now that we have it we will try to defend it until the end of the week."
Australia's Daniel Furmston (Praties Cycling Team) kicked off the start of the climber's competition winning stage's only ascent into Spring Hill.
"I was really keen on getting this jersey today, especially to represent our sponsors," said Furmston. The Australian hopes to defend the red and white jersey as the peloton begins its journey through the Allegheny mountain range.
Multiple separations in the field occurred in the early kilometres of the stage. However only one breakaway of 15 riders succeeded in crossing the finish line ahead of the splintered main bunch.

Baumann, who went on to finish third, initiated the 15 riders split that included third place on general classification Van Heerden. The presence of Van Heerden in the break presented the opportunity for a new virtual leader, with both the yellow jersey and second on general classification notably missing from the group.
"I was in the initial break, which was great because I was heading into the yellow jersey," said Van Heerden. " I tried to get away again coming to the finish line but it didn't work out."
The group did included KOM leader Furmston, along with Aaron Pool (Johan Brunyeel Cycling Academy), Joel Dion-Poitras (Team Race), Geert Dijkshoorn and Dennis Luyt (Stadler), Erik Barlevav and Nick Frey (Time Pro), John Parish and Alex Boyd (Waste Management), Adrian Gerrits (Team VRC), Stefano Barberi and Shawn Rosenthal (Zteam), and Charles Marzot (Fiordifrutta).
"I initiated the break away before the feed zone with the intention of getting a feed first, but it turns out 15 riders came with me and they were all great general classification contenders," said Baumann, pleased to provide his U-25 development team exposure after taking third place in the sprint.
With less than 20 kilometres to the finish destination of Carlisle, the top two general classification riders Van Vooren and Lacombe successfully bridged across to the break. The duo brought across three additional riders - David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast), Gaston Aguero (Esco-Telefonics) and the event's best young rider Peter Salon (VMG-Felt).
Barberi initiated several attacks with five kilometres remaining that kept the speeds high approaching the finish line. Strong headwinds played an important roll nearing the line, with all attempts to escape failing, leaving the group to sprint for stage honours.
The Tour of Pennsylvania will continue from Camp Hill for stage three's 166 kilometre road race tomorrow. The peloton will make two mountain passes before descending to the Bedford finish line.
