Zielinski takes power in the day of glory for Bretagne-Armor Lux

The continental Bretagne-Armor Lux had its best day of racing to date when it took wins two separate stage races and rolled into the lead in the general classification of both events as a result. Polish rider Piotr Zielinski won the first road stage of the Boucles de la Mayenne in Ernée, in the north of the Mayenne province with a powerful sprint from a breakaway group. Adding to his joy, Bretagne-Armor Lux directeur sportif Philippe Dalibard then heard that Noan Lelarge won the uphill time trial of the 2.1 Pyrenean Route du Sud.
"This is my first win this year," said Zielinski who took over from Agritubel's Nicolas Vogondy the day after the prologue. The Agritubel team began the day with four of their riders in the top five overall, but lost command of the race to Bretagne-Armor Lux, the only team with three men among the 13 escapees who made it to the end.
"I'm very disappointed because I had attacked confidently with 2.5km to go," commented Bichot who is a local rider in the Mayenne province. He actually won this race in 2002 prior to turning professional the following year with Barloworld. Bichot is in contention for one of the remaining spot for the Tour de France at Agritubel.
He now lays in second place overall just five seconds behind Zielinski who took all the benefits of the time bonuses. The duel between Bretagne-Armor Lux and Agritubel is far from over with two days to go.
How it unfolded
Piotr Zielinski (Bretagne-Armor Lux) was already a member of the five man breakaway who went early and was away at the km 53 – the registration number of the Mayenne province where a hot spot sprint is contested every day. The Polish rider outsprinted Jimmy Casper (Agritubel) and took three precious seconds bonus. The three other escapees were Julien Fouchard (Côtes d'Armor-Maître Jacques), Stéphane Rossetto (CC Nogent-sur-Oise) and Malaya Van Ruitenbeek (Kuota-Senges).
The bunch reacted strongly but the decisive move went with 100 km to go in Saint-Denis-de-Gastines. It was formed of 13 riders: Zielinski again with his two team-mates Antoine Dalibard and Sébastien Duret, Freddy Bichot (Agritubel), Björn Glasner (Kuota-Senges), David Tanner (VC La Pomme), Arnaud Godet (CC Etupes), Gwénaël Teillet (U Nantes-Atlantique), Gaël Malacarne (Côtes d'Armor-Maître Jacques), Jérôme Frémin (USSAP Barentin), Thomas Berkhout (Rabobank), Franck Charrier (CC Nogent-sur-Oise) and Matti Helminen (Palmans).
Their advantage went up and down but never over 1'45". Benoît Daeninck (CC Nogent-sur-Oise) amazed everybody as he came across by himself and replaced Frémin in the leading group. The 13 men stayed 38 seconds away from the bunch on the finishing line.
Bichot's attack with 2.5km to go created a split in the front group. Zielinski preceded Charrier and Bichot and also took the lead with five seconds advantage over Bichot.
