International Cycling Classic - Superweek - NEUSA, July 11-27, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - July 18: Ripon Red Hawk CriteriumTeamwork comes to the front at SuperweekBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Ripon, Wisconsin Though Superweek is often used by individual pros as 17 days of motor-pacing for the big criterium races coming up in August, a few teams do show with bigger numbers - and the difference shows. Such was the case with the Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast team during Friday's criterium. A three rider break that went in the first 10km contained a newer member of the team, Jake Keough - as well as Bernard Sulzberger (Virgin Blue) and Russ Langley (Battley Harley Davidson). And once the break lapped the field it was six green and gold guys on the front for the final 15 laps of the race, bringing him to the line for the win. "I couldn't have won the race without them," Keough told Cyclingnews. "They are true professionals and when we caught on they rode the front the entire way. I'm new to the team and having a guy like Alex Candelario leading you out is pretty cool." A late-race shower significantly affected the racing, as it allowed the break to actually catch the field and made the turns like ice. "Our team is pretty well-known for just loving the rain," Keough said. "It actually helped because it cooled down a little bit and three guys go faster than the field in the rain, so it helped us catch the field." Conversely Sulzberger, who has been racing in the breaks seemingly every day, was negatively affected by the rain on the final lap. "I hit it on the hill and got a decent gap into the corner. But there was a Columbian guy off the front that we were catching right then and it made me take the corner a bit finer and I dropped myself." A few laps earlier Langley succumbed to cramps that come from racing 100km crits in the heat every day. "I cramped up with three to go so I was done," he said. "We rolled the corners a lot better when it was just us, but it was hard out there. A long time to be out there and not a lot of recovery out there today. But everyone was working really well together." This left the door wide open for Keogh. "I was planning on going a little later and then braking hard into the [final] turn. I saw [Sulzberger] coming in hot and I let off and took it slow through the turn and then gassed it." Though he crashed out, Sulzberger showed he is one to watch in this series. "I couldn't believe I made the break again!" said the Australian. "I was a bit tired but I had enough for the finish." Earlier in the race, the series leader Sterling Magnell (Rock Racing) was actually in the three rider break with a half-lap on the field. But an ill-timed rear flat into a turn sent him to the deck and out of the race. However, his lead was such that he kept the jersey and will start the next day's race in Waukesha. His team-mate Rahsaan Bahati also retained his sprint jersey lead. Both riders showed up to the race wearing specially made team shorts to match their jerseys.
