49th Fitchburg Longsjo Classic - NEMassachusetts, USA, July 3-6, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 5: Fitchburg State College Circuit Race, 75/34 miRace leader takes stage three victoryBy Kirsten Robbins in Fitchburg, Pennsylvania After claiming the overall race lead in the previous day's 'queen' mountain stage, Kyle Wamsley (Colavita/Sutter Home) showed his versatility by sprinting to victory in stage three. Brazil's Kleber Ramos (Garneau-Crocs) and point's leader Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) completed the podium. "I just can't believe how strong those guys are," said Wamsley who rode well protected behind his Colavita/Sutter Home pace setting squad. "They just kept it together the whole race and anytime there was even a small gap on us they brought it back. "They gave me an incredible lead out coming into the finish," he continued. "I just believe in my team and their strength. I have to hand it to my Colavita guys - They're the ones who won the race today." Wamsley further increase his overall race lead to 17-seconds ahead of Justin Spinelli (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Medifast) and 19-seconds ahead of Ted King (Bissell). "I think I was about to cry coming across the line. I was able to get the win in the jersey and having it with one day to go is great." "When they worked as hard as they did today and yesterday, I have to come through for them. They gave me an easy ride and the chance to win - That's what makes this a team sport." The dwindled field came barrelling down John Fitch HWY and into the final corner led by Team Type 1's Emile Abraham and Milne. Bissell's pair Scott Zwisanski and Ted King followed close behind, with Colavita/Sutter Home's Alejandro Borrajo and Wamsley and Garneau-Crocs' Ramos just behind them. Shawn Milne initiated the sprint to the finish but with 150-meters to go both Wamsley and Ramos jumped ahead to take the top two stage placing. "Our team is a new Canadian team but we have a lot of good riders so we were not surprised when we got here that we would have a result," said the Brazilian sprinter, Kleber Ramos. "We had good position on the last lap and were able to do a good sprint to make it to the end." How it unfoldedThe 140 rider field blasted out of the blocks for what turned into an increasingly aggressive 24-lap, 120-kiometres circuit race held on the Fitchburg State College surrounding roads. Team Type 1 initiated what seemed like an endless round of attacks from beginning to end. Several times during the race small groups rolled off the front over the circuit's gruelling 400-meter climb. No matter how well stacked the breaks were, they seemed unable to match the organization of Colavita/Sutter Home, protecting the prestigious leaders jersey. "It was really hard to day away no matter who was in the break," said the events sprint leader Shawn Milne. "Colavita did a very good job, hats off to them because they died a thousand deaths and I think that's why nothing stayed away," he continued. "I think everyone was aggressive but Colavita was very strong today and Kyle is simply on fire." The constantly changing break started as eight riders who slipped off the front for two laps. The escapees included Stefan Rothe (Marx & Bensdorf/Tristar), Emile Abraham and Jesse Anthony (Team Type 1), Jake Rytlewiski and Robbie King (Rite Aid), Andrew Talansky (Toshiba), Tim Johnson (Health Net), Esteban Jukich (Richmond Pro). Colavita/Sutter Home's steadfast train pulled back the well working break just in time for 2005 Fitchburg champion Jonathan Page (Batley-Harley Davidson) to snap off the front. Eneas Fryre (Target Training), Aidan Charles (Nerac), Garret Peltonen (Bissell), Clayton Borrows (Rite Aid), Dan Vaillancourt (Toshiba) and Matt Crane (Health Net) soon joined the 2006 world cyclo cross silver medallist. "We wanted to make it as hard as possible and shake up the GC a bit," said Milne regarding his team's tactics. "We didn't want to make it an easy field sprint and we knew Colavita would defend it well so we wanted to make it hard to see what would happen," Milne said. "I think we had them on the ropes a little bit but they did a fantastic job defending their jersey today." Stage winner and race leader, Wamsley noted several points of worry during the last three laps of the race. "There were two Team Type 1, two Bissell, and me and one of my team-mates off the front with four laps to go but it all came back together." The group was again reabsorbed and countered by one last flyer attempt from Richard England (Bissell). He was reeled back in on the last lap before the final ascent of the finishing climb. Farina wins break sprint; Cheatley holds leadCheerwine continued their winning streak when breakaway rider Robin Farina won a two up sprint against Anna McLoon (Colavita/Sutter Home). The pair finished over one minute ahead of the bunch sprint won by US national criterium champion Tina Pic (Colavita-Sutter Home). "Anna worked really hard and did the majority of the work," said stage winner Robin Farina who did not want to pull the two-person break too far ahead of her team-mate and race leader, Catherine Cheatley. "I was sitting on conserving and to represent our team in the break." Catherine Cheatley continues to lead the overall, 19-seconds ahead of Kristin McGrath (Colavita/Sutter Home) and more than one minute ahead of team-mate Robin Farina. "We were here to defend the jersey," said Farina. "Our plan was to let her go for the first two sprints and then send a break up the road. "We wanted to contain Colavita and play defensive. A break was good for us and we were happy with that to let Cat sit in a rest a little bit." A new tie emerged from the sprinters competition, this time between Lorena Candrian (HPC powered by Altar) and Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine), both holding 85 points each. With the first sprint bonus passed, Elena Leznik (CRCA-Radical Media) took an opportunistic flyer that resulted in the winning breakaway. Farina and McLoon bridged across to the solo rider with in one lap and the three set sail. The effort put forth to start the break away proved too much for the instigator and she fell off pace from her newly united break companions. "We wanted to get in an early break because no one really knows me in the NRC field - so hopefully they would let me go," said McLoon, a former cross-country skier turned cyclist. "I wasn't really sure what to do," continued McLoon who experienced her first NRC race in the Nature Valley Grand Prix, three weeks ago. "I worked with Robin to see where it would go but I think I ended up doing more than my fair share. But it's a learning experience and I'm sure I'll keep learning." McLoon and Farina advantage increased to over one minute while the content field sat back and let the break see through to the end. Farina jumped out of the last corner to finish six seconds ahead of McLoon on the climb up Pearl Street to the finish. "Anna was great today and a strong rider," said third place, Tina Pic. "We though we would try to get her off the front hoping that no one would know her and it worked." America's two most decorated sprinters continued to push each other to their speed limits. Pic took the initiative out of the last corner to take the final podium place. "It didn't seem as hard of a course today as I though it would be given we did the road race first this year," said Pic. "It was a tricky sprint because it is so long. I think it was hard and I was dying at the top."
