Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United), the man nicknamed 'The Horse', applauded downtown Bend's flat stage four criterium after his bunch sprint victory ahead of Kyle Gritters (Health Net-Maxxis) and Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living).

"I'm happy to have put on a good show," said stage winner Rollin, who continued to joke with the crowd. "As a sprinter this is one of the worst races I have ever done. There is climbing every day which is not great for me, but I had some fun tonight."

It may not be the yellow jersey of the Tour de France but the thick crowds gave race leader Levi Leipheimer (Astana) a warm reception as he rolled to the start line for the evening criterium in the Cascade Classic yellow leader's jersey.

Leipheimer maintained his 1'58" lead over Tom Zirbel (Bissell) and 2'02" gap ahead of Jeff Louder (BMC).

"These guys were really fast tonight and Toyota-United rode a fantastic race," said Leipheimer who admitted he could not remember the last time he raced a top notch US criterium. "Chris Horner put on clinic for me, always in front and in control – he's worth eight guys to me."

Leipheimer competed in the Cascade Classic ten years ago and noted the many changes he observed in this evening's criterium.

"Wow, this race was off the hook," said Leipheimer. "It's ten times bigger, better and faster. I don't remember it being this aggressive."

Leipheimer's accomplice Chris Horner showed his strength at the front setting a quick tempo that held a lengthy, seven-man break of riders at a 20 second advantage.

None of the breakaway riders presented a threat to the general classification. The move included Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis), Curtis Gunn (Successful Living), Ivan Stevic (Toyota-United), Daniel Holloway (Garmin-Chipotle), Davide Frattini (Colavita-Sutter Home), Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) and Christopher Barton.

As the escape's gap grew beyond 20-seconds, Toyota-United organised a well-calculated train, reducing and holding the front riders at a ten second margin for the last 40 minutes of the 90 minute-long twilight race.

The American clad squad reeled in the last breakaway rider, their team-mate Stevic, who became an important element of their dominant lead-out train with five laps remaining.

Runner-up Kyle Gritters noted the final lap as a place for him to squeeze into a good sprint position. "My team-mates kept me out of the wind," said Gritters. "Praise the Lord that Toyota-United kept the speed so fast that it was safe. I jumped in behind Rollin."

The Pro 1 men's field rolled to the line anxious to begin the first and only flat stage of the Cascade Cycling Classic, stage four, a 90-minute evening criterium.

Successful Living was the first team to send off their riders one after another including Alessandro Bazzana followed by Bradley White. Roman Kilun (Health Net-Maxxis) brought the individual flyers back into the field with his quick tempo at the front.

Fifteen minutes into the race, elite national criterium champion Daniel Holloway launched himself into what turned into the most significant breakaway of the evening.

Curtis Gunn and Ivan Stevic latched onto Holloway's wheel until one lap later when Shawn Milne, Christopher Barton, Rory Sutherland and Davide Frattini jumped across to form the break of seven.

Back in the bunch, Chris Horner continued to set a tempo on the front of the field with race leader Levi Leipheimer safely on his wheel. The pair of Astana riders received help from individual riders from Giant Berry – Specialized and BMC.

Fifty minutes into the race, a large crash through the backside chicane caused nearly thirty riders to flee to the mechanic's pit for service and a free lap.

Injuries eliminated multiple riders from the race including Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) and Jonathan Garcia (BMC).

As the field shattered into two large groups, Officials pushed the pit riders back onto the circuit several seconds behind the main bunch and forced to bridge the gap. One rider noted in the chase bunch was second place on GC Tom Zirbel (Bissell).

The breakaway did not escape accidents as Christopher Barton and Curtis Gunn crashed through the second to last corner on separate occasions. Gunn reunited with his breakaway but Barton did not.

The six remaining riders worked well together until Toyota-United reduced the time gap from 20 seconds to eight seconds. As the separation decreased, the breakaway riders became unorganised sprinting for the lap primes that continued to increase by the hundreds.

With nine laps to go, Ivan Stevic and Davide Frattini continued as the remaining breakaway riders sat up with Toyota-United quickly approaching.

Stevic continued solo for three more laps but retreated to the field with four laps remaining to help with the lead-out.

Miller victorious in Bend; Armstrong protects her lead

Brooke Miller (Tibco) took a convincing win ahead of Gina Grain (Webcor) and Allison Testroete (Aaron's) in a bunch sprint in the stage four downtown criterium.

"My team was very aggressive during the race, hoping to get a break," said Miller, who surfed the opposing team trains in the last lap.

"We wanted the win and when it was apparent that it was going to be a field sprint, I stayed top five and used the other teams lead outs to bring me in," continued Miller. "I wanted to start the sprint behind Gina Grain who was the fastest sprinter with the best lead out."

Race leader Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) had her hands full keeping the field together to maintain her overall lead ahead of Christine Thorburn (Webcor) and best young rider Julie Beverage (Aaron's).

"I was joking with Kristin Armstrong during the race, thanking her for the hour long lead out because she was at the front, on the gas," said Miller who admired Armstrong's relentless tempo on the front of the field."

"She was always on the front, and when the field bunched up she was there stringing it out again."

The Pro women's field started the race with a series of attacks from Aaron's riders Meredith Miller and Felica Gomez.

The constant string of attacks caused the field to separate in its early laps and several small, reshuffling breakaways represented a rider from Tibco, Aaron's, Webcor and Value Act Capital.

"It wasn't really our intention to form a breakaway," said Felicia Gomez who found her self off the front alone for three laps. "It just sort of turned out that way from trying to go for primes and keep the speeds fast and safe."

Gomez and junior rider Coryn Rivera (Kahala La Grange) initiated the move before a $200 prime. "Coryn took the prime and I continued in the break alone."

Kristin Armstrong took on the responsibility that a full team would to defend her leaders jersey. Armstrong spent nearly the entire 60 minutes on the front of the field and never seemed to drift back more than third place.

Second place on the day, Gina Grain, took the opportunity to practice her sprinting, pocketing a large sum of cash on each prime sprint.

Recently selected to the Canadian Olympic team for the point's race, Gina Grain noted the valuable training that prime sprinting offers a point's racer.

"Well I think I'll use the money to get a few drinks tonight," half joked Grain regarding Bend's lively downtown race venue.

"I was really just training for the points race tonight," continued Grain who almost crashed on the finishing lap.

"Our big goal was to go for the stage win tonight as well. Our team did a good job with the lead out even though there were a few kafuffles in the end."

Team Aaron's organised an effective lead out with two laps to go and maintained their lead through the last lap. However, Team's Value Act Capital, Webcor and Tibco worked their way into position through the chicane on the backside of the circuit.

Webcor's lead out took over and dominated the last half of the finishing circuit to bring their sprinter, Grain out of the last corner in first position.
