Jelajah Malaysia - 2.2Malaysia, January 7-13, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - January 12: Kuala Kubu Bahru - Genting, 122.2 KmHossein Askari takes queen stage, Tonton Susanto retains the leadBy Jean-François Quénet in Genting Highlands Tonton Susanto is a true legend in Asian cycling and definitely the best ever Indonesian rider to date, but he has never put a stage race overall classification on his record book. At the age of 34, he's close to doing so at Jelajah Malaysia after winning his duel with Iran's Ghader Mizbani in Genting Highlands. The rivals finished together at halfway into the climb as the organisation of Jelajah Malaysia decided to stop the party at this point instead of going all the way to the top like Le Tour de Langkawi does every year. Susanto put in some hard punches to Mizbani and kept enough energy for passing him right at the top of the climb, located 200 metres before the finish. That King of the Mountains position awarded him one more second bonus and the third place at the stage behind Mizbani's team-mate at Tabriz Petrochemical Hossein Askari and Giant Asia's David McCann gave him four more seconds bonus. Susanto now enjoys a nine-second lead, and nothing should change during the final criterium in Kuala Lumpur held at the same place – Dataran Merdeka – as the traditional happy ending of Le Tour de Langkawi. "I dedicate this performance to my wife and my daughter Nayyara Raisa Putri who will be two years old next month," the exhausted Indonesian after the stage. "I'm really grateful to my LeTua team for its cooperation." As their top politicians were making the headlines the same day because of meeting in order to resolve their neighbourhood problems, Indonesians and Malaysians have found the way to get on really well together inside the continental team backed by cycling enthusiasts. LeTua might be working on a ridiculously small budget and not having secured a sponsor for its bikes yet, its riders have pleased the Malaysian fans beyond all expectations during Jelajah Malaysia and its sprinter Anuar Manan remains the hot favourite for the last stage in Kuala Lumpur. How it unfoldedFour riders took off after five kilometres: Salehian Farshad (Azad University), Hossein Jahabanian (Tabriz Petrochemical), Jacob Nielsen (Farso) and Shimpei Fukuda (Japan national team). At half way into the stage, they got their maximum lead of 3'20" while the LeTua team of race leader was busy setting the pace of the bunch in order to avoid any danger prior to the final climb of Genting Highlands. Jahabanian captured all three intermediate sprints, but not enough to threaten the lead of LeTua's Anuar Manan. After the first mountains points spot of the day, the gap was reduced to 1'20" and the four escapees got caught with 10 kilometres to go on the Genting climb. Hossein Askari was the first rider to reach them. He was riding both for the polka dot jersey and for his Tabriz Petrochemical team-mate Ghader Mizbani to take the race lead over from LeTua's Tonton Susanto. Inevitably, Susanto marked Mizbani closely. It was a superb mano a mano behind the sole Askari who waited three times for the duo, however he went on solo for the stage win as he realized he was no help for Mizbani. The latter attacked strongly with five kilometres to go but didn't drop his Indonesian rival off. Their can 'n' mouse attitude favoured the return of David McCann of Team Giant, who overtook them and grabbed the second place at the stage. The time bonuses would decide which one of Susanto and Mizbani would win the overall; Susanto's third place awarded him the leader's red jersey probably for good.
