Jelajah Malaysia - 2.2Malaysia, January 7-13, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - January 11: Gemas - Karak, 133.7 KmAll for LeTuaBy Jean-François Quénet in Karak With three stage wins and the race overall leader's jersey plus the lead in the points competition, the Malaysian continental team LeTua couldn't expect a better start and a better position in the Jelajah Malaysia prior to the hardest stage up to Genting Highlands. The race only climbs to its half-way point, not to the top like in the Tour de Langkawi has since its inception on the cycling calendar in 1996. Anuar Manan has bagged his third stage win in Karak while his LeTua team was busy targeting two other goals at the same time: preparing for the intermediate sprints since the stage finish didn't count for the points competition and defending the lead of Tonton Susanto. "It was kind of easier than we expected today," the Indonesian veteran racer said as he worried about a pain in his back resulting from his crash with two kilometers to go after another rider bumped into him. After stage five, only four seconds seperated Susanto from runner-up Ghader Mizbani of Tabriz Petrochemical. The two riders will duel in the coming stages. "We'll work for Tonton after trying to consolidate my lead in the points classification," Manan said. "Today my team-mates were supposed to keep the bunch under control for the first two sprints, but they just kept working from the kilometer zero to the finish. That helped me reach my target of improving on my total number (two) stage wins from last year." With three stage wins, Manan equalized the record set by Indonesian rider Samai Amari in 2003 when the Jelajah Malaysia was a 10-day long race and Susanto was his team-mate at Wismilak. At the age of 34, the man who is regarded as the best-ever Indonesian road cyclist hasn't lost any of his motivation for the sport. "And I enjoy racing for Malaysian team LeTua a lot," he said. "The team spirit here is fantastic." How it unfoldedA first first hot spot sprint after only ten kilometers into the race was the perfect opportunity for Anuar Manan to increase his lead in the points competition one day after being threatened by Kuala Lumpur's Suhardi Hassan. The LeTua sprinter also won the second hot spot sprint with his lead-out man Sayuti Zahit taking the second place. After that, it was time for a breakaway to go. At 72km, seven riders broke clear: Yoshiyuki Abe and Yoshinori Iino (Skil-Shimano), Loh Sea Keong (Trek-Marco Polo), the brothers Takamitsu and Yoshimitsu Tsuji (Matrix-Powertag), Agung Ali Sahbana (Indonesia Costums) and Wan Mohd Najmee Wan Mohamed (Kuala Lumpur). The highest ranked of these seven riders were Loh Sea Keong and Abe who were 8'48" down on Susanto, but surprisingly, they never got a larger advantage than 1'20". The break got caught with only five kilometers to go and there were a few crashes in the last three kilometers with no consequences to the overall classification even though the race leader was one of the victims. Susanto continues to lead the race after the third bunch sprint win of his team-mate Manan. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Jean-François Quénet
