Jelajah Malaysia - 2.2Malaysia, January 7-13, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - January 7: Putrajaya - Port Dickson, 176.5 KmLi Fuyu posts first win for his Asian come backBy Jean-François Quénet in Port Dickson After one season with Discovery Channel, Chinese rider Li Fuyu has signed his come back on the Asian circuit by winning stage one of the Jelajah Malaysia. He won a six-man sprint in Port Dickson alongside the Malacca Strait at the end of a much-contested day of racing. "I like fast races, that's why I enjoyed the situation today," Li said afterwards. "I didn't want the breakaway group to stay together till the end, so I tried to go alone with 15 kilometres to go but five guys managed to come with me and I never dropped them off. So I had to try my luck in sprinting. With 50 metres to go, I realized I had a nice advantage." He preceded former Gerolsteiner rider Marcel Strauss and Jacob Nielsen from Denmark. Iranian Hossein Askari was the most impressive in the climbs. With his position now on GC, he can wait for the second last stage of the race which will feature half of the climb of Genting Highlands, known for being the hot spot of Le Tour de Langkawi. "The overall classification will be decided there," Li said. The Chinese rider has obviously improved under the wing of Johan Bruyneel although he was successful on the Asian circuit before joining Discovery Channel for one year. On his return to his former team now renamed Trek-Marco Polo, he has found only one of his previous Asian team-mates, Malaysian Loh Sea Keong who already helped him to win the Tour of Siam and the Tour of Thailand in 2006. "There's nothing I could do about the disclosure of Discovery Channel but I definitely want to go back to a ProTour team next year," the 29 year-old said. How it unfoldedJust as excited as Tour de France riders on stage one, Asian cyclists started the Jelajah Malaysia on a very high speed. After 20 kilometres of racing, local rider Sayuti Zahit from LeTua was the first man to score when he out-sprinted big Swede Hakan Nilsson from Differdange-Apiflo, and David McCann, back in Asia with Giant after one year in the USA with Colavita. In fourth place was Sayuti's team-mate Anuar Manan, who became the first leader of the points competition that includes the hot spot sprints only, as he won the second of them further on. At the bottom of the second climb of the day, the captain of the Malaysian national team Fauzan Ahmad Lufti impressed a big part of the field. His acceleration at kilometre 65 gave birth to a 13-man breakaway in which he was the only Malaysian out of 29 of them starting the country's second biggest stage race after Le Tour de Langkawi. To accompany Fauzan were: Tomoya Kano (Skil-Shimano), Paul Griffin (Giant-Asia), Li Fuyu and Ken Onodera (Trek-Marco Polo), Hakan Nilsson (Differdange-Apiflo), Tonton Susanto (LeTua), Hossein Askari (Tabriz), Marcel Strauss and Dimitri Jiriakov (Stegcomputer), Jacob Nielsen and Soren Petersen (Farso) and Kazushige Kuboki (Japan national team). They reached a maximum lead of 4'20" at kilometre 110 and were chased down by Japanese team Matrix-Powertag. None of the counter-attacks managed to come across but the front group split with 15 kilometres to go under the action of Li Fuyu who looked really strong. Six men broke clear and sprinted for the win, the Chinese rider being also the fastest of them. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Rosli
