4th Tour of Utah - 2.2Utah, USA, August 13-17, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - August 16: Deer Valley - Snowbird, 159km/98.1miLouder's preparations pay off with a victoryCaldwell holds a slim leadBy Kirsten Robbins in Snowbird, Utah Jeff Louder (BMC) thanked his altitude fitness, pre-race training camp and his hometown fans for an impressive 'Queen' stage victory atop Snowbird Ski Resort. He set a climbing tempo strong enough to surpass two breakaway riders, Blake Caldwell (Garmin-Chipotle) and Glen Chadwick (Team Type 1) in the final kilometre. "I can't say that I held anything back, but I definitely tried to stay with in myself and in contact with the leaders," said Louder who closed a remarkable gap to Caldwell with one kilometre to the mountain top finish. "I couldn't go with the accelerations at the bottom, but I knew that when I got to Tanner's flat, near the top, that I had a chance at the win." Tanner's flat marked approximately three kilometres to go, a section of gradual climbing that suited Louder's style more than the previous steep sections. "I train a lot on the flatter grade climbs, five or six percent stuff and at altitude," he continued. "I set my sights on Caldwell and just tried to reel him in. Once I caught him I jumped for the finish line with 500 metres to go." The epic stage saw some important changes in the general classification when Louder moved into second place, seven seconds behind Caldwell in the yellow jersey. Chadwick moved into third place, 42 seconds behind the leader. "I felt good and rode a steady speed on the climb," said Caldwell, who initially jumped on the ascent's steeper pitches and passed Chadwick who took the early lead. "I wanted to make as much time on everyone else as possible so I wanted to jump across to Chadwick alone. "But Louder passed Chadwick and came across to me," he continued. "In the last few kilometres he had more gas than I did and I lost his wheel – he put in a strong last 500 metres and opened up a gap. But, with the extra motivation of having the yellow jersey I want to go out there tomorrow and pay back my team-mates for all the hard work they did for me today." A selection of riders was decided early on the ascent that included, Louder, Chadwick and Caldwell along with Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing), Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) and Burke Swindlehurst (Bissell). The KOM leader made one swift leap out of a select group to catch and pass Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing), who made the first attack. Alone off the front, he committed to a grueling effort trying to hold off the small chase group. "I felt good on the previous climb and I had to have a go just to see what would happen," said Chadwick who just recently returned from the Beijing Olympics. "I picked that time to jump because I saw Sevilla slow down in front of us and I saw the field sit up a bit where I was, so I went for it." Caldwell was the next to make his move, in pursuit of Chadwick. The yellow jersey held a smooth pace up the climb as he caught Chadwick and kept on going. With a stage win on the climb two years ago, he looked to have a second victory waiting for him at the top. Louder broke away from the stellar chasers in pursuit of Chadwick and Caldwell. The pair was already up the road, pursuing the stage victory. He attacked his group on a flatter section located approximately three kilometres to the top and quickly made up time on the two leaders. "We came prepared and very strong," said Louder greeted by his wife, Soorya and daughter, Milana at the finish line. "We are a stage racing team and we came up here to train specifically for this race one-week prior. We rode all the stages, all the climbs and prepared well for it. It's also amazing to win at home." How it unfoldedThe climbing resumed after last night's twilight criterium at the 'Queen' stage 4 road race where the riders were treated to over 14,000 feet of ascending. The race started in Park City and traveled 160 kilometres to finish atop the scenic Snowbird Ski Resort mountain top finish. After the first of many highway grade rollers, the most significant break away of the stage that included the green jersey Matt White (Successful Living), Health Blackgrove (Toyota-United), Ian McGregor (Team Type 1), Mike Creed (Rock Racing), Matt Cooke (Health Net-Maxxis), Ian McKissick (BMC) and Mark Peterson (Garmin-Chipotle). Peterson sat in the luxury seat as the strongest climber in the group but obliged to sit back because his yellow jersey team-mate in the main munch behind. "Garmin-Chipotle was in a good position because they didn't have to work too hard controlling the race with Peterson up the road," said Louder. White solidified his green jersey lead as the best sprinter when he picked up full points along the intermediate sprints, located before the major climbs of the day. The gap increased to nearly four minutes when the main field neutralized due to a train crossing en route. However, their time advantage came back down as they started up the base of Alpine Loop, the severe opening KOM. Swindlehurst jumped off the front of the field and gained forty-seconds, closing in on the lead group of seven riders. The advantage forced BMC and Garmin-Chipotle to set a fast tempo on the climb. After toughing out a difficult ascent, the field brought back both Swindlehurst and the breakaway riders with the exception of one, Michael Creed. Creed left his breakaway companions behind and set sail for the top of Sundance Canyon Ski Resort. His lead increased to over one minute as he crested the top with a head start on the very technical descent. Chadwick reached the top of Sundance next and picked up enough points to solidify his polka dot jersey lead as the event's best climber. He was accompanied by his team-mate Valeriy Kobzarenko, Darren Lill and Brent Bookwalter (BMC) and Tom Danielson (Garmin-Chipotle). "There was just one moment of worry coming off the first KOM where Lill went to the front and railed it over the top of the descent," said Caldwell who felt well protected by his team-mates. "He's a very technical descender and he opened up a gap. That was the only time that I had to close the gap but luckily it was on a downhill and so wasn't a huge effort." The splintered peloton descended in a high-speed rally around the switchbacks vying to create lengthy gaps on the not so good descenders in the bunch. The main field of forty riders, including Creed, regrouped on the flatter sections toward the second smaller KOM. After passing two KOM's, thirty of the nation's top climbers approached the base of Little Cottonwood intact. The 12-kilometre climb included steep sections and countless switchbacks. "I wasn't too surprised to see the big group at the base," said Louder. "It's such a big climb that no one wants to leave it all out there before you get to it," he continued. "These are the best riders in America, it's not a surprise but an expectation for them to be there – It's a sign of the depth of the peloton that's racing here." Caldwell and his team-mate Tom Danielson attacked the field to chase the threatening attack from Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing). The front of the field regroup but the Spaniard stretched his legs a second time and broke clear gaining ten seconds. The decisive small chase group formed behind Chadwick that included Caldwell and Louder along with Baldwin and Swindlehurst. The yellow jersey jumped across to Chadwick and passed him mid-climb while the remaining three followed one another up to Tanner's flat, near the top of the climb.
