4th Tour of Utah - 2.2Utah, USA, August 13-17, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 14: Odgen - Salt Lake City, 137km/84.6miCaldwell makes it two for Garmin-ChipotleBy Kirsten Robbins in Salt Lake City, Utah Blake Caldwell (Garmin-Chipotle) brought home a second consecutive victory for his team at the Tour of Utah when he out sprinted his late-break companion Darren Lill (BMC) at the finish line in Salt Lake City. "Our goal for the race was to keep the jersey and go for a stage win if possible," said Caldwell, who killed two birds with one stone. "I had the luxury of sitting on Darren until the end because we were after keeping the leaders jersey." Caldwell's stage win, plus time bonuses, landed him the yellow jersey as well. The Boulder native is currently leading the race with a four-second lead on Darren Lill (BMC) and 18-seconds ahead of his team-mate Jason Donald. "We wanted to keep the jersey and with that in mind we wanted to ride in the breaks," he continued. "If there were no breaks, keep it controlled for Donald. We have a strong climbing team here and I think yellow is something we can hold onto." Lill initiated the break on the final and most significant ascent. Caldwell followed him and the pair gained a maximum of one minute on an eleven-rider chase. "I knew it was going to be touch and go, but it was possible to stay away," said Lill. "I put in a lot of work and because his team-mate had the yellow jersey, Caldwell didn't have to commit – that played in their favour," he said. "I found myself doing the lion's share of the work, but I was committed and I wanted to make it to the line. I forwent the stage but at least I gain time toward the GC." Eighteen seconds later, an eleven-rider chase containing the top climbers in the country stormed to the finish line. Rock Racing led the chase in numbers, but in the end, BMC's Louder proved he was the quickest rider in the small bunch race for third. "The team rode amazing with all seven of our guys active from the word go," said Louder pleased that his team-mates effort paid off in the end. "We trained for this race specifically and I think that shows specificity counts. I had no pressure in the chase, I got to sit back and relax." How it unfoldedThe stellar field of top-notch climbers assembled at the start of the stage two, 137-kilometre point-to-point road race. The stage started in Ogden winding through the mountain passes to the finish line in Salt Lake City. The distance seemed relatively short for the professional field standards but altitude gain made up for what lacked in kilometres. Will Frischkorn kicked off the day with a solo flyer. The climber from Boulder recently made his excellent debut when he landed on the stage three's podium at the Tour de France. With three mountain passes and 10,000 feet of climbing, he was a threatening rider and thus his solo effort was short lived. Small break-aways attempted to put time into the field at the base of the first climb over Ogden Pass. The climb was located just 16-kilometres into the stage and fresh legs kept the field together. Riders from Rock Racing, Successful Living, Bissell, BMC and Toyota-United vied for good position. Young talent Peter Stetina and his Garmin-Chipotle team-mate, Blake Caldwell, along with Scott Nydam (BMC), set a tempo on the climb that shattered the field behind them. "We wanted to be aggressive and have good numbers in the breaks – always have a rider in the break," said Caldwell. Five riders bridged across to include Teddy King (Bissell), Jonathan Chodroff (Ride Clean), Chris Jones (Team Type 1), Michael Creed (Rock Racing) and the man wearing the green jersey, Brad White (Successful Living). The valuable mountain points available at the top of the mountain motivated the strong climbers left back in the field to close the break down. Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United) picked up full points followed by Glen Chadwick (Team Type 1). A technical descent greeted almost twenty leading climbers. They had sizeable lead on the rest of the field at the bottom. Riders from BMC continued to force the pace, sending their riders off the front and forming several small groups behind them. "We were really aggressive today," said Louder, attributing the team's success to their recent Utah training camp. "We knew the roads and what to expect and the guys road so well today." The yellow jersey, Jason Donald (Garmin-Chipotle) was not sure of his climbing fitness after the previous stage. However, he mustered up the climbing legs needed to mix in many of the break-aways established. His effort to sit close to the front took pressure off his team-mates. "We always had two guys up the road and it was our goal to race defensively," said Donald. "The guys road so awesome today. I didn't think I'd climb so well so it's all icing for me now - I'm so happy to see Caldwell in the lead." The main field swelled back up to some forty riders before the first intermediate sprint. Current sprint leader Brad White increased his lead when he won the sprint and continued onward solo to the base of the next classified mountain. Donald noted that the fitness amongst the top climbers seem to be relatively equal, playing a key role in team tactics on the road. Many have looked to Rock Racing's climber Oscar Sevilla to make a strong move, but that has not happened. The Spaniard noted that his fitness has not been up to par due to a bad crash several weeks ago. "I sprained my wrist and bruised my ribs – It was my worst crash in my twelve years of racing," said Sevilla regarding his accident at the Tour of Qinghai Lake. He collided with a spectator who jumped onto the road to take a photo during the finishing sprint. "I took ten days off and have been training to get back on form," continued Sevilla, who despite his recovery was involved in some of the ascent's significant break-aways. "Little by little, it's getting better and I hope to be racing well soon." Glen Chadwick proved to be the standout climber of the day when he took full points atop the second classified mountain. Chadwick earned the points needed to take the lead in the climber's competition. "There are a lot of good altitude climbers here," said Chadwick. "I've always been good at altitude too, though, I'm not sure why." Forty riders attacked one another on the way to the third and most decisive climb of the stage. One notable rider, Scott Nydam, crashed and broke his collarbone when he touched wheels with another rider in the bunch. "It's a small cause with a big ramification," said BMC director Gavin Chilcott. "He was trying to go to the side of the road to properly dispose of the water bottle and fell, not exactly a battle scar." Nearing the final and most significant classified mountain, a strong group of riders separated themselves from the dwindled main bunch. Riders included Caldwell and Lill along with Jeremy Vennel (Bissell), Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis), Chris Jones (Team Type 1), Sheldon Deeny (Fan Sports Network), Michael Grabinger (Successful Living) and Ian McKissick (BMC). Lill and Caldwell gained a large lead when they picked up the pace on the scenic mountain road. Their advantage held steady at 40-seconds as they passed the East Canyon Reservoir, located half way up the steep's steep pitches. "He put in a hard effort and about half way up it was just the two of us," said Caldwell. "Our gap was falling fast actually and I thought we'd be caught pretty quickly on the descent – just two little climbers like us. I think they sat up a bit at first and then we managed to hold a small advantage to the finish." Caldwell attacked Lill as they approached the top of the pass, but the South African rider kept him in check before they began the long descent to Salt Lake City. "I drove the break because Caldwell had the yellow jersey sitting in the chase group behind us," said Lill. A new chase group of eleven riders formed behind the pair of leaders, picking off each of the original break members. The fresh but familiar faces included Chadwick, Louder and his team-mate Brent Bookwalter (BMC), Sevilla, Tyler Hamilton and Cesar Grajales (Rock Racing), Phil Zajicek (Health Net-Maxxis), Burke Swindlehurst (Bissell), Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United), Peter Stetina and the yellow jersey Jason Donald (Garmin-Chipotle). Stetina and Donald were obliged to sit on the break with a team-mate in the front break. Rock Racing had the most numbers and used them to drive the large chase group down the finale descent into town. They sprinted for third place and time bonuses, arriving 18-seconds behind Caldwell and Lill. "Tomorrow is the criterium so not much will change on the GC," said Lill who hopes to gain more time toward the yellow jersey on Saturday's stage four hilltop finish. "Who knows, I believe I'm riding well and anything can happen. There are a lot of great climbers here." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
