Rochester Omnium - 2.2New York, USA, August 8-10, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - August 8: Time trial, 4.08 miRoth crosses 'the pond' to snag a victoryBy Kirsten Robbins in Rochester, New York The newly vamped Rochester Omnium not only attracted America's best, it also drew in a flock of Canadians from across the pond - Lake Ontario. Canada's Ryan Roth (Team Race Pro) was one such rider and proved his form with the fastest time trial of the day. The Ontario native took the victory ahead of the Toyota-United pair Dominique Rollin and Johnny Clarke. "I put a lot of effort into my time trial this season," said Roth, who placed second in the Canadian national championships last month. "I think time trailing is an area of cycling that comes more natural to me and they really matter in a race like this one." Omnium points will determine the overall champion of the stage race instead of time accumulation. There are points given to the top 20 riders of each stage, with Roth's victory earning him the early lead with 35 points, Rollin with 25 points and Clarke with 20 points. Rollin and Clarke held the fast times for more than half of the event, until Roth flew in with an unexpected best time of 7'21". "I wasn't too surprised with Ryan's performance today," said Rollin. "He's always been a good time trialist and I had him picked for my top five list this morning." Morning rain poured over the 6.4-kilometre course long enough to cause slight anxiousness amongst the field. But sunny skies opened up and dried the pavement before the 1:00 PM start time. One-by-one the riders rode off the staging ramp to complete the flat, out and back circuit. Each rider faced a strong head wind on the way out, greeted with the windy push back to the finish line. "I definitely felt like it was hardest going out into the wind," said Roth. "I could make up the most time there so I made the first half, to the turn around, my finish line. "I don't think the course was too technical but I wanted to get through the corners safely - you can't make up too much time there but you can really lose a lot if you crash," he added of the two technical corners before the finish line. Roth will wear the yellow jersey in tomorrow's 120-minute twilight criterium held in downtown Rochester. Team Race Pro may have its hands full controlling the sprint-hungry peloton. "I think tomorrow is more suited to a team like Toyota-United and some of the other sprinting teams," said Roth. "I don't think my team will have to control the race. It's a fast race, it's short and it kind of controls itself." Toyota-United sprinter Ivan Dominguez will be ready to jump on a stage win. His team-mate Hilton Clarke will no doubt want to take a third consecutive victory as well. The team is up against sprinters like Emile Abraham (Team Type 1), Sebastian Haedo (Colavita/Sutter Home), David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit), Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living) and Tony Cruz (BMC).
