Petacchi back on sprinter throne

Alessandro Petacchi (Team Milram) has signed his come-back, by outsprinting Ruben Bongiorno at the end of Stage 1 in the Tour of Turkey. The event is Petacchi's first since spending a number of weeks on the sidelines due to illness.

Only a centimetre separated the two riders on the finishing line in Kusadasi, near the ancient city of Ephesus. Ephesus contains the largest collection of Roman ruins East of the Mediterranean, including the temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The riders also passed nearby the House of Virgin Mary, but they didn't get much opportunity to enjoy the landscape as they focused on the stage. "Sincerely, I didn't see much, I only thought about the stage win and the great work that my team-mates were doing for catching the breakaway," said Petacchi.

It was a good day for Sean Lacey (Irish national team), Josef Soukup (Sparta Praha) and Christoph Meschenmoser (Team Ista) who aren't used to show themselves at the sport's top level but were able to with a breakaway today. Despite the trio's escape, it was obvious that a bunch sprint would conclude the stage.

The victory brought relief to Petacchi, something he hasn't enjoyed since Stage 4 in Tirreno-Adriatico. "Unfortunately I don't have the same shining capacity here now," the Italian commented. "I got sick with bronchitis, I had to take antibiotics and I only trained for five days since Milan-San Remo.

"I didn't re-start from scratch but I can't expect too much here," he added. "I'm maybe at 50 percent of my normal winning condition. I can afford 20 kilometres efforts like today, but probably no more yet. I actually enjoy racing in the heat again and I hope to improve my condition here in Turkey. I don't worry about the timing between now and the Giro d'Italia."

Petacchi started sprinting by himself 250 meters before the line. So close was the finish that Bongiorno put his arms up in the air but the winner was really Petacchi. "I started early to avoid any risk of crashing," he said. "I gave the acceleration at the end and I thought I had won but I wasn't sure."

This is Petacchi's seventh win this year, making him the most successful professional rider this year. The seventh victory puts him one ahead of Alberto Contador and Tom Boonen who scored their sixth victories at the Tour of the Basque country and Paris-Roubaix respectively on the weekend.

Petacchi will wear the yellow jersey at the start of Stage 2 in Kusadasi heading to Bodrum. The Italian will once again probably miss the scenery, as the race passes the dazzling blue bay where the Agean and Mediterranean Seas meet.

How it unfolded

From the 148 starters, the Irish riders proved to be some of the most motivated for Stage 1 in the Presidential Tour of Turkey. Peter Hawkins was the first man in action.

The significant breakaway took shape with another member of the Irish national team Sean Lacey together with Josef Soukup (Sparta Praha) and Christoph Meschenmoser (Team Ista).

At the 83.4 km sprint prime Lacey was first ahead of Soukup and Meschenmoser, with the peloton 5.25 minutes behind. Soukup became the king of the mountains when he passed in first position at kilometre 98.2, ahead of Meschenmoser, Lacey and Dimitri Nikandrov (Centri della Calzatura-Partizan), who was the first rider of the main bunch.

Meschenmoser took the Turkish Beauty sprint in Ephesus with 18.5km to go. Soukup was second and Lacey third, but the peloton was nearing the break. The adventure came to an end for the break shortly after that sprint.

In the final 10 kilometres, Pierigiorgio Camussa (NGC Medical), Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval) and Gustavo Cesar Veloso (Karpin-Galicia) tried their luck, but a lack of straight roads towards the end didn't favour their move. They were caught with six kilometres to go as the Milram's blue train led the charge.

Vytautas Kaupas (Mitsubishi-Jartazi) also went away on his own. Many riders were active with five kilometres to go, but it went down to a bunch sprint.

Petacchi was left alone by his team-mates from Milram with 250 meters to go. Ruben Bongiorno (CSF) almost overtook Petacchi on the line, but the Italian was declared the winner while Javier Benitez (Benfica) from Spain took third place.
