44th Tour de l'Avenir - 2.NcupFrance, September 6-15, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - September 6: Belle-Île-en-Mer, 148.5 kmPoulhies takes controlFrenchman Stéphane Poulhies took a commanding lead on stage one of the Tour de l'Avenir, taking not only the opening stage from a day long breakaway, but gaining the lead in the points and mountains classifications as well. Back to the national teams format, the 44th Tour de l'Avenir started off with a rapid pace and plenty of attacks in the opening kilometres, but it wasn't until the 15 kilometre mark that anyone could go clear. Yoann Offredo (France B) went off on a solo bid for victory and held a 3'45 lead at the first intermediate sprint (km 40), increasing his advantage to 6'10 on the pack by kilometre 60 before seven riders countered from the field in an attempt to go across. With the breakaway looking serious, the peloton put in a strong chase, bringing back the group of seven by Sauzon (km 70) and shrinking Offredo's lead to just 2'15. Two riders then went clear, Stéphane Poulhies (France A) and Valerio Agnoli (Italy), getting within 1'25 of the leader at the second intermediate sprint (km 81,5). Behind, Mathieu Deschenaux (Switzerland) was in no-man's land, while Kunshin (Russia), Kruijswijk and Smukulis (Netherlands) and Wyss (Switzerland) escaped the clutches of the peloton and came across. The group reached Poulhiès and Agnoli and finally Offredo at kilometre 86, making an eight man breakaway which slowly built its advantage to 1'30 lead at kilometre 97. The group built a maximum advantage of 1'50 lead before the Slovenian riders put in an intense chase, bringing the group back to 35'' at kilometre 118.5. The lead group shed Offredo, Deschenaux and Agnoli, leaving the five stronger riders to extend their lead. Poulhiès, Kunshin, Kruijwick, Smukulis and Wyss worked together to increase their gap, and then Poulhiès and Kruijwick left the other three behind by the third sprint of the day. Poulhiès took the points and bonus seconds ahead of Kruijwick and then the pair let the three chasers rejoin, leaving the peloton 1'45 behind. On the final lap of the circuit the break was two minutes clear of a deflated peloton, but Poulhies kept the pressure on, and clearly the strongest man in the break, took the final sprint ahead of Kunshin Kruijswijk.
