Hilton two for two; Cliff-Ryan shows her stars and stripes

Navigators' flexes its team power

Navigators out wrestled a stellar field with their five strong riders who took Hilton Clarke all the way to the win of the 2007 Tour of Somerville. Their impressive lead out ended with Oleg Grichkine pulling Clarke toward the finish line letting him loose with two hundred meters to go. Rite Aid's Alejandro Borrajo was the only sprinter capable of coming between Clarke and Grichkine to take second place.

"I didn't see who was behind us because our whole team was at the front with two to go," Clarke said. "We were bidding our time because David O'Loughlin was off the front so in the end we had riders to spare. I waited and waited to make my sprint off of Oleg."

The new course lent itself well to flyers and every team took a chance at it beginning with Johnny Sundt (Kelly Benefit). The small gaps were reeled back in by the relentless attacks coming up from behind. A reshuffled break gained ten seconds on the field mid way into the race that included Colavita/Sutter Home, Priority Health, Navigators, Abercrombie and Fitch, Fiordifrutta, Health Coach and Nerac but the reshuffling stopped with fifteen laps to go as the active peloton regained complete contact with the riders.

All further attacks seized with Clarke's teammate, Irish national criterium champion David O'Loughlin took the final flyer with three laps to go that took some of the pressure off of his team. The final two laps were heated but Navigators took control and increased the speeds so high that no team was able to contest it.

Navigators' proud director Ed Beamon commented on Clarke performance today in light of his win just two days earlier. "Clarke is really on form right now," Beamon said. "We won the Kelly Cup a couple of days ago in a solo break and so we wanted to see how his sprint was coming around -- He is a complete rider."

He sat in the sweet seat during the final two laps but just behind him was a tremendous battle for his wheel amongst teams Rite Aid, Nerac, Kodak-Sierra Nevada, Caico, Jittery Joes, Abercrombie and Fitch and Colavita/Sutter Home, all on the hunt for a podium sprint.

Alejandro Borrajo won Clarke's wheel coming through the final corner and commented on his first Tour of Somerville and the effort needed to obtain his good position on the final lap. "It was a beautiful, classic race and I have never seen so many people cheering all over the course," Borrajo said. "My team told me to watch Navigators and get their last wheel. It was important to be there in the last two hundred meters and then do whatever I could in the sprint."

Somerville marks the second event of the US Crit Series where Abercrombie and Fitch sprinter Mark Hekman maintained his lead. Hekman commented on his team's goals of holding on to the lead until the end. "I just sat in until the finish to try to do as best as I could. It was such a fast course that I knew nothing was going to get away and this race always comes down to a field sprint."

Cliff-Ryan claims the 'Kentucky Derby'

US criterium champion, Theresa Cliff-Ryan took first place in the women's race after a drag race to the line. The stars and stripes jersey showed her mid season form as she was seen flying up the six hundred meters finishing straight and no one was able to come around her. T-Mobile's Kate Bates took second place and attacking out of the bunch was third placed Jenny Trew from Vitesse.

The women raced twenty miles on the lengthened 1.4-mile course, a circuit used in the 1950's. The long straight away through the start finish and on the backside allowed the peloton to spread wide across the road in a bubble behind the constant string of attacks.

Team Lipton made their presence known mid way through the race as one rider after the other made an effort to split from the field. Multiple attacks came out of the women's field with no exceptions on the final lap. While Cheerwine prepared for an effective lead out, UltraLink's Kele Murdin jumped out of the field in a swing for the win catching the sprinters off guard.

The extra long finishing straight made it difficult to judge when to jump and on what side but the luck of the draw went to Cliff-Ryan as she stormed her way down the left side of the road with Kate Bates hot on her heels. The majority of the field swung to the left of the road clogging up all hopes of a clear shot at the sprint for Cheerwine, Team Lipton, Aaron's and Colavita/Sutter Home who well prepared and ready to jump.

Canadian talent Jenny Trew jumped into the wind to the right of the field and used her momentum to successfully come around those caught up on the left and scooped up third place.
