Joe Martin Stage Race - NEFayetteville, Arkansas, USA, May 11-13, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 12: Road race, 149/111 km (M/W)Double stage shakes up Joe MartinBy Mark Zalewski
Menzies takes out road race field sprint, Sutherland the time trialAfter more than ninety miles of attacks and strategy, Aussie strongman Karl Menzies (Health Net-Maxxis) was the strongest on the day, taking the field sprint win and the lead of the Joe Martin Stage Race. The field sprint came after breakaways spent long stretches off the front of the peloton, causing a hard and fast race in spite of a tough uphill time trial awaiting the riders later in the early evening. "It was really pretty aggressive racing from the beginning," said Health Net-Maxxis director sportif Jeff Corbet. "It took about thirty miles for a break to even get established." That breakaway consisted of Brian Dziewa (Jelly Belly), Brian Jensen (HRRC/Trek Stores), Tim Johnson (Health Net-Maxxis) and a Calco rider. With Johnson in the break it was up to Toyota-United with race leader Ivan Dominguez to do the chasing. But the terrain did not lend itself well to reeling in the break, and the gap held more than a minute for twenty-plus miles. Eventually, Toyota-United did bring the break in after teams like Priority Health put in a few riders to help. But one of their own, Edward King, jumped off the front with Aussie James Meadley (Jelly Belly) and the two held a short gap for a long time - similar to the earlier break. And like before, everyone left it up to Toyota-United to do the work. "Those two rolled about 1'30 gap with twenty miles to go and Toyota had to chase again," said Corbet. "With ten kilometres to go it was still about a minute gap. Toyota chased harder but nobody was helping." Into the final five kilometres the field knew the break was not likely to succeed, and the strategy of hurting Toyota-United had worked, with Dominguez dropping during an attack on one of the climbs. Into the last kilometre Meadley was caught, but King held on until the final 300 meters. Menzies earned a time bonus that put him ahead of the rest of the field, putting him into the lead going into the unusual 6.7 percent uphill time trial. "Its a weird TT - they just do start times based on bib number," said Corbet. But in that time trial, teammate Rory Sutherland was the tops, putting him into the overall lead with six and eight seconds' lead on Ivan Stevic and Chris Baldwin, respectively. Tomorrow's final stage is a criterium, but one that ensures the GC is anything but a lock. "Tomorrow is one of the tougher crits on the NRC circuit," said Corbet. "It's hilly and technical - it runs more like a small circuit race. It's not a parade, it can shake up GC."
Cheers for Cheerwine, overall to ColavitaThe style of racing was inverse for the women today, with many likely looking ahead to the time trial to make their move on the general classification. "It was a fairly conservative race considering there was a time trial this afternoon," said Webcor's Rachel Heal. Without much fanfare during the race, the sprinters took over in the end. And fast as fast can be, it was Cheerwine's Laura Van Gilder and Kelly Benjamin, taking a one-two placing ahead of Heal. "The team did a great lead out but I don't have as much experience as say Laura or Kelly," said Heal about the sprint. But the sprint finish was a surprise for Heal, who fancies herself more an all-around racer. "I guess I'm more confident in sprinting with this team." In the time trial the women's overall was flipped upside down, with Alex Wrubleski (Colavita-Sutter Home) squeaking out a one second win ahead of Webcor's Katheryn Curi. Cheerwine's Brooke Ourada finished third at four seconds - which is how the top three on the overall look going into tomorrow's final criterium.
