Bayern Rundfahrt one for the flatlandersBy Susan Westemeyer The Bayern Rundfahrt may sound like a mountain climber's dream, but it is actually a race for the sprinters and time trialers. In fact, former Team Gerolsteiner time trialing ace Michael Rich dominated the race in recent years. Rich will be at the race again this year, but in the team car, acting as Directeur Sportif. 18 teams, including five ProTour teams, will participate in the five-stage race over a hilly, rather than mountainous, course. The ProTour teams will be sending some very big names: Jens Voigt, Andreas Klöden, Stefan Schumacher and Gerald Ciolek, to name a few. The sentimental favorite has to be Erik Zabel, who last week confessed to having used EPO for a short period in 1996. It was announced only the day before the race started that he would indeed be allowed to continue to ride for his Milram team. Jens Voigt (CSC) and Andreas Klöden (Astana) are favorites for the overall title, with Voigt having won the race already in 2000, 2001 and 2004. Klöden is using the race as preparation for the upcoming Tour de France. Gerolsteiner is sending Stefan Schumacher to the race, also as preparation for the Tour, with Fabian Wegmann also a possibilitiy to do well. T-Mobile Team will concentrate on stage wins, counting on youngsters Marcus Burghardt and Gerald Ciolek. The race organizers have acknowledged the recent doping scandals that have rocked pro cycling in general and German cycling in particular. "We have purposely not included extreme difficulties, such as very long stages or extreme mountaintop finishes," they said. "In this year, the Bayern Rundfahrt is the shortest in its history with 765 km." The race is also supporting the German cycling Federation's campaign "Bleib sauber - Live clean", in support of a clean sport. In fact, the organizers said, "We decided not to have a commercial sponsor the back numbers for the riders, and have instead given this space to the 'Bleib sauber - Live clean' campaign." The race starts Wednesday in the winter sports center Garmisch Partenkirchen and ends Sunday in Fürth. It features a 24 km time trial through the famous tourist center of Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, known for its well-preserved medieval old town.
