Tour of Ohio - NEOhio, USA, June 19-, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - June 21: Road raceDickey sprints into yellowOne day after being foiled in a solo bid for victory, Dewey Dickey (Mercy/Specialized Racing) came through in a dramatic two-up sprint for victory on Stage 3 of the Tour of Ohio. Dickey beat Mark Hekman (Abercrombie and Fitch) to the line for the win, while Chris Monteleone (Time Development) took third place. How it unfoldedThe events queen stage rolled out from Old Man Cave State Park to commence over 68 miles of severely undulating terrain, including five major climbs. A small breakaway containing Tim Swain (A&F), Eddy Hilger (Juris MorePartnerIncome.com), Scott Walnofer (Mercy Cycling), Tim Regan (Herring Gas), and Seth Myer (Get A Grip Cycles) opened the hostilities, rolling away 15 miles into the race. Eventually, over the next 15 miles, the original five were whittled down to just Swain and Meyer and were joined later by Hekman, Mike Stoop (Seigler Sports) and Jamie Gandara Jr. (Colavita/New Mexico). The penultimate climb over Chapel Ridge saw Dickey make a furious charge from one minute down over the leg breaking climb. After the descent down Ash Cave the final selection emerged containing Swain, Dickey, Gandara, Meyer, Hekman, Monteleone, John Minturn (GPOA Meredith), Akira Wong (Organic Athletes), James Duncan (Time Development), Dan Campbell (Anthem), and Matt Winstead (Juris MorePartnerIncome.com). The brutal final climb over Glick Hill, which was featured in the 1994 National Road Race, proved to be decisive in separating the wheat from the chaff with Dickey, Hekman, and Monteleone dropping the other hopefuls. Hekman, who today proved his quality on the open road in addition to his mastery of criteriums, traded pulls with Dickey until the final rise to the finish. There Dickey powered ahead of a hard charging Hekman while Monteleone put up the white flag and conceded the sprint. As a reward for his long stage win, Dickey pulled the jersey of the overall leader over his shoulders. Hekman ironically retains the sprinters jersey, while Tim Swain has the mountains jersey. Tomorrow the Bike Source Tour of Ohio moves from the country to the suburbs, with a 40 mile circuit race that winds up and down through the tree lined streets passing the tidy yards of Worthington.
