Race Across America - NEUSA, June 10-22, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Day Next Day Day 2 - June 11Robic charges on, Clif bar takes 24 hour raceBy Danny Chew Solo leader Robic had a 12 hour split of 225 miles – making it to Blythe, but just short of the TS. Robic continues to lead through almost every time station, and rode 420 miles his first 24 hours. Fasching took the lead briefly at the Hope TS and held it through Congress (TS 6). Although the timestation spreadsheets show Robic reaching both of the timestations before Fasching, Robic started before Fasching in the staggered start so Fasching had a shorter elapsed time on the road than Robic at those timestations, putting him briefly in the lead. Since Prescott, Fasching has held onto 2nd place within 16 minutes of Robic. 8 solo riders have been issued penalties – the most (totaling 90 minutes) going to Robic [for follow vehicle violations and riding against traffic - ed.]. TS #6 in Congress, AZ at 3,050 feet was quite active. Jeff Oatley was leaving Congress when I talked with his crew. Mechanic Ben Couturier said Jeff had 3 tubular flats and broke a rear wheel spoke. Jeff has had two 15 minute sleeps. Also in Congress, Brett Walker was in the middle of a 2 hour sleep when I arrived. He had 2 flat tires. His crew chief Brad Cilley said that the desert heat yesterday caused Brett to have digestive issues, and that he vomited 3 times while riding uphill. Once he backed off his pace, Brett was better within an hour. Their target mileage is 320 miles per day. Solo women's Type 1 diabetic Kerry White took the solo women's lead from early leader Hana Ebertova in eastern California, and has held it ever since. The last rider in the solo race, 59 year old Patty Riddle arrived in Hope nearly 9 hours after White. Her husband Terry said that Patty got sick in the desert heat, causing her to fall so far back. At Hope, her average speed had dropped to 9.12 mph, but still above the 8.48 mph 50+ women's record. In the 24 Hour race, last years 4th place solo Enduro finisher Kenny Souza lead his Team Clif Bar to another victory, but the team just missed breaking their 2005 speed record of 21.07 mph. On the RAAM website, their speed is 20.82 mph. Even with the 5 mile detour, their average speed is 21.03 mph – very close to the record. The real battle was for 2nd place between Swami's Team and America Specialty Health Riders. They started out back and forth until ASHR pulled away in Eastern California. ASHR finished 1 Hour, 47 Minutes behind Clif Bar, and 25 Minutes ahead of Swami's Team. Team Strongheart diaryBy Tim Case Greetings from the race course of the 2007 Race Across America. Team Strong Heart, with our rookie crew and racers are out on the course as I sit down in the RV for a bit of recovery time. We left Oceanside, CA earlier today to a cheering crowd, media and random people who happened upon the race along the Pacific Ocean boardwalk. After the 13 mile 'parade' rollout, our first rider, Bernie Kaeferlein was sent out onto the race course for the first shift of the day. Our strategy for the RAAM has been to break our four person team into two two-person sub-teams, working approximately half hour shifts for four hour blocks of time. Our expectation is that this will keep the pace high and allow our racers more time for recovery. Time will tell how this strategy will play out. After breaking free of the suburban sprawl of San Diego County, my sub-team partner, Greg Kostik, was treated to a 4000 foot descent into the desert valley where the air was terribly dry and the pace was terribly fast. As I write, the desert continues to roll by and the sun is setting on the painted hills of California. We rolled into time station 2 and executed a nighttime trade with our other two person subteam, which has allowed Greg and I time to recover and eat some actual whole food. Our crew has been a model of perfection, patient, kind and always willing to offer a hand to make the race just a bit 'easier'. The race officials, staff and fellow racers have been super supportive and friendly which has also made this budding effort just a bit more manageable. Off to bed for me, which happens to be in the back of an RV passing through the desert, en route to our next shift out on the road. 113 miles down, many more to go.
