VanGilder victorious in Hollidaysburg

There was no holiday in Hollidaysburg when the women started three blazing fast circuits totaling a 96-kilometre trek around the quaint town. Cheerwine's Laura VanGilder convincingly won the sprint to the line after she jumped the field at the base of the hill and held off the chasing sprinters from behind while Expresscopy.com's Alison Testroete landed her second podium of the race, sprinting in a close second. Aaron's strong woman Katharine Carroll took third place.

"I was impressed with how fast our race was and certainly not comfortable because this race was raced harder than the previous years," VanGilder said. "The whole week had been hard racing and I've been surprised because the stages themselves are very daunting."

VanGilder commented on finding the right flow to the finish with the help of her two teammates Leigh Hobson and Catherine Cheatley. "It was all about remaining in contact over the top of the climb," VanGilder said. "I was in a position to not have to work too much. After the descent, I tried to surf the wave, do a good hard jump over the railroad tracks and hold it to the line. I didnt think I had it won at all because there can be a lot of momentum from behind."

The women started Stage 4 of the Tour de Toona in a dash to try to split the field. A culmination of the entire peloton's action and reaction forced the speeds throughout the circuits. Though several good combinations broke away from the field on the first two laps, no breaks gained more than 15-20 seconds until Armstrong attacked at the base of the QOM on the second lap.

Armstrong, along with Gomez, Mara Abbott and Amber Rais (Webcor-Builders), created a sizeable gap over the climb and held it around the start of the final lap. Speeds continued to increase as teams with strong sprinters had a vested interest in a field sprint and began to chase the four breakaway riders. Throughout the course of the stage TEAm Lipton kept a steady tempo on the front with little falter when surrounding teams attacked.

Katharine Carroll (Aaron's), who has just returned from a racing project in Europe, noted the stage's similarities to European style of bike racing.

"Armstrong attacked again at the base and had a decent gap but was always in sight on the climb," said Carroll. "Mara tried to get up there and we caught Armstrong at the top of the climb. There was a slowing then and I knew it was important to be in the top ten for the descent. I tried to be patient and wait for the other teams to set up their trains after that."

After the descent there were two kilometres to the up hill finish line where TEAm Lipton, Cheerwine and Expresscopy.com brought their sprinters inline for a field sprint. VanGilder showed no sign of tired legs after her tremendous effort in the previous stage breakaway when she exploded from the field toward her stage victory.

TEAm Lipton's Kori Seehafer continued her lead in the overall followed by Aaron's Felicia Gomez in second and four Webcor Builders riders tied for third. Though Gomez took second place to Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton) in the QOM she continues to wear the polka dot climber's jersey with a total of 22 points. The green jersey changed hands, now led by Alison Testroete with 23 points after she took partial points in the intermediate sprints and second place points in the finish.

Friedman scores a much-needed win

After two difficult point-to-point road stages, the Tour de 'Toona switched gears into circuit race mode. Although the stage was shorter than yesterday, the racing was still fast. Luckily for Health Net-Maxxis and its race leader Karl Menzies, a non-threatening breakaway formed, allowing the team to ease back a little. Out of that seven-man breakaway, Mike Friedman (Team Slipstream-Chipotle) used his sprint skills to the fullest, besting Mark Walters (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada) and Scott Nydam (BMC) on the tough uphill finish.

"I went through the second-to-last turn first because I knew they would be on my wheel," said Friedman. "Then I just slammed on my brakes and Walters and Nydam went right by me, it was just like track racing. Then I was third wheel and Walters jumped at the railroad tracks and I just went with him. If the line was five metres longer it might have been different."

Friedman had bridged up to Walters with six others after Walters had initiated the day's brake, riding solo for many kilometres. "Walters was just dangling off the front," said Friedman. "There was a flurry of attacks - the whole first lap was fast from the gun. I figured Health Net would let some guys go if it was the right guys - a couple of guys attacked and I tagged onto them."

Back in the peloton, Health Net-Maxxis was happy to set an average tempo, allowing the break to gain upwards of four minutes. "The perfect group went for us and the team kept it in check," said Menzies. "It went to four minutes and one of the guys was leading. Towards the end Toyota and Navigators put guys on the front and dawdled our way to the finish. It was a short stage so it wasn't going to be overly hard. You can't worry about stage wins when you are going for GC. It was good to give the guys a little rest with Blue Knob on Saturday."

With more than four minutes entering the final lap, the break was likely to stick - and all Health Net had to do was make sure the gap was under two minutes to keep the jersey with Menzies. Heading towards the final climb, which was only 3km from the finish, the pace in the break picked up. "[Attacking on the climb] crossed my mind," said Friedman. "I had done a couple of accelerations on the course and it would create like a ten length gap. It only kicks up for 500 metres then levels out, so it's a really good climb for me. But the attacks were already coming, so I just put myself in position on the wheels."

For Friedman, the win means more than just any old win. After being diagnosed with a rare blood clotting disorder last fall, he was sidelined for the spring. He then returned to racing in a tough European campaign and has been working uphill ever since. "For me it's an emotional breakthrough," he said. "It feels good after all I went through last fall.

Regarding the previous stage's controversial finish circumstances, Menzies said the decision to nullify the stage results meant there was no more discussion about it in the peloton. "I think that was the fairest for everyone," said Menzies. "The most fire was coming from the directors. The riders, it was all done. Nothing lost, nothing gained."

Tomorrow is another short circuit race, and with no major climbs. As for Saturday's penultimate stage with an epic climb up to the Blue Knob ski resort, Menzies is motivated -- both after last year's result and this year's performance. "I haven't really been 100 percent all year, and I don't know why that is. But now I am back and a lot motivated."
