International Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 23-29, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 25: Galleria Mall - Logan Valley Mall, 154.3 kmSeehafer takes over yellowBy Kirsten Robbins in Altoona, Pennsylvania There is nothing like a little game of 'hot potato, pass it on' over the yellow jersey to keep the International Tour de Toona exciting and the riders on their toes. The treasured jersey has changed teams for the third time in as many days, this time landing on the back of stage winner Kori Seehafer (TEAm Lipton). Seehafer along with Felicia Gomez (Aaron's) separated themselves from an 11 rider break over Blue Knob and came storming into the finish line in a heated two-up sprint. Seehafer took the advantageous lead through the last corner to win the stage over Gomez. "To lose the stage to Kori is really no loss because she is an admirable opponent," said second placed Gomez. Rachel Heal (Webcor-Builders) took the third place on the podium from a chase group of four behind. "It was a good duo because we complimented each other's weaknesses," Seehafer said. "My first objective was to get over the climb in order to help my teammate Kristin Armstrong if she bridged up to us after and later I knew I was the virtual leader because we had such a big time gap over the field. There was one point when the group of four almost caught Felicia and I but she drove it over the last kicker hill and we had another big gap." Several breaks formed at the start of the 150 kilometre stint from Johnstown to Altoona, but Seehafer initiated the winning break at the 40 kilometre mark, before the first Queen of the mountain. Riders who quickly followed suit were Rachel Heal and Laura Yoisten (Webcor-Builders), Laura VanGilder (Cheerwine), Gina Grain (Expresscopy.com), Catherine Powers (Aarons), Lyne Bessette (Team Quebec) and Meredith Miller (TEAm Lipton). Another group of seven riders joined bridged across causing the break to swell to 14 riders. The second group to bridge across contained Dotsie Bausch (Colavita/Sutter Home), Hellen Kelley (Webcor-Builders), Heather Labance (Advil-ChapStick), Felicia Gomez (Aarons), Chrissy Ruiter (Cheerwine) and Robin Farrina (Wines of Washington). When the break grew to 14 riders, only one rider form each team took pulls allowing the other to rest for the five-kilometre climb over Blue Knob. "We had about 14 riders to start in the break and 10 of those were working well but as the gap grew more the less people were working," said Gomez. "Once some of the other riders started to sit on so did Kori and I." The large break of riders gained a maximum of five minutes before Webcor-Builders pulled two of its riders from the break to help their general classification teammates reduce the gap from behind. Approaching the most decisive climb of the day, Lyne Bessette took control of the break and drove it up the gradual portion at the base. Gomez took over and set a tempo that only Seehafer could muster the power to hold onto and the two riders crested the climb with a hefty gap on the others. "It was a really good duo because Kori is awesome on the descents and I would just hang on and then on the climb I would keep it real steady," explained Gomez. Heal, Bausch, Ruiter and Bessette were unable to close the gap to the pair off the front because Gomez kept the pressure on over the rollers and Seehafer on the descents. The GC riders from Webcor-Builders drove the field into the climb and sent Katheryn Curi on the attack at its base. Curi's attack was then countered by her teammate Christine Thorburn and the field began to shatter from behind. A select group of rider's that included the yellow jersey holder Alison Powers (Colavita/Sutter Home) made it over the top of the climb and continued the chase but while they caught the remnants of the leaders on the road were out of reach. TEAm Lipton director Mike Tamayo noted his teams performance a perfectly executed plan. "We had a goal for today and we executed it," Tamayo said. "The girls took that plan and made it work they way they wanted it to. But, my hat also goes off to Colavita because they rode a great race, they took responsibility for having the leaders jersey and did everything they could do. The best thing Powers could do was limit her losses and that is what she did." Gomez took full point over the two QOM's and has moved into the polka dot climber's jersey. Another Toona, another controversyBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor Last year, in the final road stage, Karl Menzies was on the receiving end of bad luck when as race leader his chase group was led off course in the closing kilometres - causing controversy amongst the teams. This year, in the second road stage, controversy was back as a poorly designed final 100 metres of the race caused some riders to sprint off course. Menzies, leading into the well-known final turn, took the wrong way around a newly constructed traffic island and jumped a curb. His path turned out to be a slight shortcut around the final turn, possibly giving him an advantage as he came across the line first. "It's an unfortunate situation and a mess," said Health Net-Maxxis director Jeff Corbett. "There is no way to know what would have happened if everybody had gone the right way, so there is no way to sort it out." "The finish was hectic but I knew I had to be first around that corner - my teammate Frank Pipp won this last year," said Menzies. "I just gassed it and hit the corner hot, and was like shit there is a traffic island! It was a leap of faith that I got over that median. I just got lucky - hit the strip and jumped it. Everyone else behind me hit it and was slowed." There were plenty of unhappy team directors and riders, with four managers quickly tracking down race officials to file a protest. "The guy cut the course, he should have been relegated," said Kodak Gallery's Kurt Stockton. "It's tough because my guy was the first guy through the corner 'on the course' and he comes around the corner and sees Menzies come through the corner, jump the median and sprint in front of him." Toyota-United director Harm Jansen and Navigator Insurance director Ed Beamon were also voicing their objections. After conferring at the finish, race officials decided to let the results stand as-is. "They said it was the least damaging to the race," said Stockton. "It ultimately does come down to course design. I think officials should have been here prior to the finish, looked at it and should have changed the finish." However, after more discussions, the outcome of the stage was still uncertain. "I don't think there is a best outcome," said Corbett. "If the results stand obviously that is good for us. And if the stage is negated it might satisfy a few people but a disappointment for others." Hours later the officials posted their lengthy communique stating that the results would be neutralized. "There was confusion and resultant course cutting by some riders in the lead group of the Pro/1/2 Field," the communique stated. "This problem was a function of inappropriate course setup." No points or time bonuses were awarded and the group was given the same time, so no changes occurred on GC. However, the intermediate sprints and KOM points did count. More importantly, the prize money on offer for the stage were negated with the officials directing the promoter to donate the money to the 'USA Cycling Junior Development Fund'. Earlier in the stage Health Net-Maxxis rode a fierce tempo that kept most attacks from getting away. "This was as good of a team effort as you can get," said Menzies. "We had all the guys just suffering from the start to get four of us fresh for the climb." However, Navigators Insurance again showed they came to race, putting two riders up in a five rider break. One of the two was Ben Brooks, who had not been looking well in the first two stages. "I thought I was going pretty good before this race started, but the first two days I felt horrible," he said. "I wanted to do something today to try to ride my legs into it. We wanted to have a couple of us up the road before the second climb and make Health Net ride. We wanted to make them isolated which kind of worked, but in the end they were able to save it." Over the climb Menzies had limited his losses, with the help of teammates such as Nathan O'Neill. However, more bad luck struck as he punctured. More controversy entered at this point as the amount of drafting behind his team car was called into question as Menzies worked to catch back onto the chase group. The officials agreed and fined Menzies and Corbett, but the professional foul was worth it as it brought the race back together. The racing is definitely on according to third place overall Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United). "It seems like every good team and every good rider in America is here," he said. "It's really aggressive racing. My heart goes out to Health Net because I haven't seen a race this year that has been this hard to control." The results of the officials decision did not sway Corbett too much though. "We're not losing a lot of sleep over it, we are still trying to win a bike race. We are already concerned about tomorrow!"
