Stage 11 - July 22: Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Grand Prix of Cycling, Evanston, IL, 100/55 km (M/W)

New Superweek race nets large crowds

By Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Evanston, Illinois

Adding a new venue to the 17 days of Superweek can be a gamble in terms of garnering the crowd sizes of the better-known races. But the newly added race in downtown Evanston, just north of Chicago and home to Northwestern University was no problem, as big crowds turned out. And the racers answered with an impressive show that included a two-man break, a five-man chase that caught the break and a gutsy attack on the final lap that netted Adam Bergman (Colavita-Sutter Home) the win.

"I just attacked into the final turn on the last lap," said Bergman. "I had softened them up with three to go. Then they hesitated as we crossed the line on the last lap, so I went."

Bergman was part of the chase group that caught up to the two leaders, Peter Dawson (SouthAustralia.com) and Thomas Soladay (Kelly Benefit Strategies). Also in the chase group was strongman Viktor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance). "It was a tough race," he said. "You have to go with every move because any of them can be it."

Soladay and Dawson did have a few laps to recover after spending a long time on the front alone. But when Bergman surprised the group, he did not immediately cover the attack. "I knew if I did I would have gotten last," he said. "So i hesitated and nobody else went. That is why Adam was able to stay away."

Back racing at Superweek was Paul Martin (Texas Roadhouse) who took a break after winning the Blue Island race on a solo move to race, and win, the elite national road title. That win came a week after he had won a master's national road title. With the stars and stripes on his shoulders, it was clear the field was looking to him to do more than his fair share of work. "I told my wife that I don't think I am going to be winning many more races this year," he joked. "Having this jersey is like having a target on your back!"

The series leader Brian Jensen (HRRC/Trek) did not finish high enough to keep his lead, passing the yellow jersey to German Christian Lademann (Team Sparkasse.) The last week of Superweek has one more road race, followed by a series of criteriums, including the well-konw Great Downer Avenue race on Thursday -- voted one of the top races in the U.S.
