Tour de Vineyards - NENew Zealand, January 1-4, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - January 2: Richmond - Nelson Lakes District, 90 kmGordon McCauley maintains controlDay Two of the tour dawned warm and sunny and saw the yellow jersey remain firmly on the shoulders of Gordon McCauley. The race leader was part of another breakaway, this time without Clinton Avery, but with the ever present Heath Blackgrove, Christchurch youngster Olly Pearce and Steve Stannard from Palmerston North. Matt Haydock, Scott Wilder and Richard Speer instigated the early break following the sprints at Brightwater and Wakefield, and were joined at the top of the Spooners Range by another 13 riders, including the top three GC contenders, McCauley, Blackgrove and Avery. The hill through Rainy River, en route to St Arnaud, provided the next bout of action with McCauley jumping up the road to join Olly Pearce, with these two soon joined by Blackgrove and Stannard, the four of whom built up a 51 second lead over the undulations leading into the race finish at picturesque St Arnaud, which graces the shores of Lake Rotoiti. Race Two saw the action happen on the Spooners Range with Gina Waibl setting the pace and allowing eight riders to crest the hill with a firm gap over the rest of the field (Tye, Basten, Clapp, Kuhajek, Torkler, Wilkes and Sheridan). These eight were later joined by Sprint Ace Karen Fulton. An altercation with a Nelson pothole resulted in a nasty crash that took Wilkes out of action, leaving eight riders to contest the sprint at St Arnaud, which was won by Serena Sheridan. The time bonuses from Fulton's sprint wins earlier in the day seeing her take the yellow jersey leading into tomorrow's challenging Takaka Hill stage. Race Three came down to a bunch sprint with old hand Brian Fowler easily taking the spoils, a few lengths ahead of Chris Nicolson and Greg Atkins. This puts Fowler in the yellow jersey head Atkins and Darrell Kircher. However, with Lester Settle and Stuart Lowe lurking only seconds behind on general classification, the race is far from over yet. Race Four saw a bunch of 14 contesting a sprint into St Arnaud, with master sprinter Malcolm Pearce taking the win from Nelson's Richie Howes and Peter Alder. Nelson's Grant Stirling retains the yellow jersey following his solo move in yesterday's stage. Tomorrow sees the most challenging stage yet – climbing over the Reay Saddle, through Tapawera and up the Stanley Brook Hill before travelling along the scenic West Bank on the shores of the Motueka River before the real race begins – the ascent of the infamous Takaka Hill. With $1000 up for grabs for the first to the top, the race promises to be an eventful (and painful) affair for the riders.
