Stage 1 - January 1: Hope Circuit Races, 55/40/30 km
The first day of the Star and Garter Wheelers Tour de Vineyards provided the spectators with plenty of action via great numbers in all grades and some fantastic racing. Despite the threat of rain, the course remained dry, so thus far Nelson has kept its reputation as New Zealand's sunny capital!
The racing in all grades was positive and aggressive with the 'flat-landers' keen to make their mark on the race before heading into the hills. The Hope School circuit is a fast, flat loop with sprint points up for grabs on alternate laps ensuring the tempo was constantly high. However, the sprinters didn't have it their own way in every grade and there are already some telling time gaps on the general classification – particularly in Race 1, with Gordon MacAuley wearing his favourite yellow jersey as tomorrow the race meanders its way into hilly territory.
Local favourite Grant Stirling took the spoils in Race 4, holding off the chasing bunch to take the win by 8 seconds from Peter Alder and Malcolm Pearce.
In Race 3, Daryl Kircher proved he is still in top form winning the bunch sprint to take the leaders jersey from Brian Fowler and Greg Atkins.
The Women had their own race this year – for the first time in the Tour's history, and it was the Nelson riders providing the excitement with Karyn Fulton attempting an early breakaway before Dale Tye and Serena Sheridan both spent time away in prolonged solo moves in the latter part of the race. However it was Tracy Clark from Christchurch who prevailed over her younger rivals to take the bunch sprint ahead of Carissa Wilkes from Rotorua and Annelies Basten from Christchurch.
The senior, U23 and U19 men’s race completed 11 laps of the circuit, with the pace high from the start as different combinations attempted to get a gap to ensure a time buffer before the Nelson Mountains play their part as the Tour continues. Eventually it was the 'super strength' trio of Gordon MacAuley, Health Blackgrove and Clinton Avery who managed to create a gap on the field. The three worked hard to maintain their initial small time gap before slowly chipping away to an unassailable lead. Team Subway were forced to chase hard, but were not able to bring back the smooth working trio, with MacAuley taking the win from Avery (who takes the Under 23 jersey) with Blackgrove rolling in for third.
Stage two sees the riders head towards the hills, racing from Richmond to St Arnaud, taking the in the Spooners Range and Kerrs Hill.
