Stage 2 - January 7: Kuantan - Kula Terengganu, 197.8 km

Floods halve stage distance

By Jean-François Quénet in Kuala Terengganu

Floods that have badly affected areas of Indonesia and Malaysia three weeks ago but they aren't totally over yet. Stage 2 of the Jelajah Malaysia started in a wet Kuantan and it was quickly obvious the riders wouldn't see a change of weather all day for what should have been the longest stage of the seven-day tour. Some teams like Giant Asia had been counting on the 197km of racing for gearing up for Le Tour de Langkawi, Malaysia's number one cycling event scheduled for February 2-11.

There were no serious breakaways as the riders headed North along the South China Sea.

Local riders fought extremely hard for the first hot spot sprint of the day. LeTua's Anuar Manan, who was already leading the local competition, showed his sprinting abilities at kilometre 52. But he wouldn't benefit from the expected bonus, as the stage was cut short.

News arrived concerning floods on the road just past the 100 kilometre mark. With too much water on the road, race director Haji Fazin Saad decided not to take any risk and the second hot spot sprint of the day became the finishing line - located in Paka, 100km into the original stage.

At this point, there were four riders away and 19 year-old Harrif Saleh (Malaysia) was the fastest to cross the line in his home state of Terengganu.

"I never expected to win a stage here," he said. "But when I was in the breakaway and with just a little gap over the peloton, I heard over the radio that the stage could end here. So I went for it and it is just great to have won the stage in Terengganu."

Due to the shortened stage, no bonus has been allocated and the overall classification remained the same, still in the hand of Stage 1 winner, Japan's Makoto Iijima.
