Santa Clarita Grand Prix- NESanta Clarita, California, USA, February 24, 20072006 Results Results Past winners Miller tops pro fieldBicycle John's Serious Cycling along with the City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita Velo held a women's professional race in Santa Clarita before the pro men arrived for the finish of the sixth stage of the Tour of California. On a perfectly glorious southern California morning, approximately 100 women raced in a total of three races: a pro 1/2 race, a cat 3 race, and a cat 4 race. Some of the top pro team racers included Brooke Miller of Team TIBCO, who took first ahead of Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine) and Becky Quinn and Jennifer Wilson (both of Southbay Wheelmen). Laura Charameda (Advil Chapstick) took fifth while and Stacy Marple (Team TIBCO) finished sixth. Felicia Gomez (Aaron's Pro Cycling Team) won the Queen of the Mountain. Other big names in attendance and finishing included Pam Schuster (Helens/Orbea) and Michelle Beltan and Kara Vidaca, both of Bicycle John's Serious Cycling. The women competed for a purse of $5,000 with a new Cannondale frame going to the QOM. The race is one step toward the goal of getting a pro women's race introduced as part of the Tour of California in 2008. Promoters hope the excitement from this year's event will spill over into next year. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Nathan Dauglash/www.mitchophoto.com
