Eisel gives the new T-Mobile a relief…Petacchi becomes nervous

In an incident-packed finale, stage 2 in the Tour of Algarve looked like a bitter loss for Alessandro Petacchi at least as much as it looked like a sweet victory for Bernhard Eisel who gave a first win to T-Mobile this year. The Austrian was flamboyant when he crossed the line ahead of Tour de France stage winner Jimmy Casper, but tension occurred when Petacchi turned back to the finish and started an argument with Robert Hunter.
After being relegated in yesterday's stage, the Italian hoped he could deliver a win but he ended up only sixth. "Hunter took the last curve like crazy, and then he stood up. He was very dangerous," Petacchi said. But was it a reason enough to physically threaten him? Petacchi's teammate Marco Velo also returned to the finishing area to confront Hunter. The South African's shorts appeared destroyed, but that was due to a crash in the middle of the race.
The Barloworld rider didn't understand why they would complain about him. "If there is a danger, I'm the first to put my fingers on the brakes," he answered. "I wasn't anywhere near Petacchi before the sprint. I wasn't going to sprint anyway because I was a lead out man for Fabrizio Guidi today. The reality is that Petacchi is useless at the moment. He doesn't have the legs for winning. He can't justify the two million euros or so that he makes. But if he's using me as an excuse for losing, he has found the wrong person."
The version of the pre-sprint incident given by stage winner Eisel doesn't include Hunter. "Marcel Sieberg went out of the Milram train right into Wouter Weylandt and Gert Steegmans," the Austrian explained. "Petacchi lost the wheels and yelled at his teammates."
"The stage was really hard," Eisel added. "On the road book it looked all flat but there wasn't a single metre of flat road. It's a pity that we were riding on bright and nice roads all day but the finale was one of the most dangerous I've ever seen. The organiser told me it'll be a different one next year. Anyway, it went all fine for me. David Kopp started sprinting 200 meters before the line. I knew it was kind of an uphill finish but I put the big gear on. I said to myself: Let's go with 53x11!"
Eisel was used to winning stages in the Tour of Algarve when he rode for Française des Jeux. Just like Stegmans the day before, he has kept his old good habits despite a change of team. His win was the first for T-Mobile in 2007. Eisel insisted on calling his team "the new T-Mobile!"
The Austrian has bigger goals than stage wins this year. He is aiming for the classics, and the Algarve region is where he is gearing up. "I'm here for 15 days, not only for the race, but I've got friends in Albufeira and it's a perfect place for training with hills and sun."
It was raining for most of stage 2 but Eisel forgot about it - he was so happy winning, a feeling Petacchi would like to have again.
How it unfolded
It took 26 kilometers before the first breakaway was launched by Tyler Farrar (Cofidis) and Lars Boom (Rabobank). They increased their lead to eight minutes at 63 km while the Quick Step team of race leader Gert Steegmans was taking care of the pace of the bunch. Milram took over later as well as Unibet.com in the finale. Quick Step rode at the front again every now and then.
In the last 50km of the stage, as Boom dropped Farrar, the Portuguese teams became active in the peloton, especially the local team of the finishing town Tavira. Luis Pinheiro (Liberty Seguros) and Kasimir Vasilev (Duja Tavira) broke clear. They were chased down by Samuel Caldeira (Duja Tavira) and Stefan Kushlev (Riberalaves-Boavista) but none of them made it accross.
Boom was still away with 2:35 at 20km to go. He got caught with 10km to go and it was a bunch sprint finish led by David Kopp and won by Bernhard Eisel.
