Rollin and Pic tops at Roswell

Kodak Gallery happy with two wins in one day

The Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada team finished the weekend with a pair of wins with Jesse Anthony winning the final stage at the Tour of Virginia and the young Canadian champion Dominique Rollin winning the Roswell Criterium with a strong solo effort on the final lap. The win in Roswell soothes the pain of just missing the top step the night before in a crash-filled finish to the Athens Twilight criterium.

"Last night we got a taste of it, but our two lead-out guys got caught in the four lap to go crash," said team director Robin Zellner. "It was strange with the Health Net lead-out crashing at the front of the race."

The Roswell race finish was markedly calmer thanks to a breakaway getting away in the second-half of the race. In the closing laps riders started attacking, including Athens runner-up Josh Thorton (Kodak Gallery-Sierra Nevada). "I felt good the whole race doing hard efforts, but I had not legs for a sprint after the crash last night - I didn't have the punch," said Rollin. "With three laps to go my teammate Josh was away with Kirk O'Bee (Health Net-Maxxis). As soon as we caught them with one lap to go I pulled off and had 200 metres on everybody and just time trialed on everybody."

"Dominque did a last ditch effort with a lap to go - and that's a long lap, a whole mile!" said Zellner. "The home stretch has to be at least 700 metres."

The two wins and a strong Tour of Virginia are a welcomed change to the team after being left out of the Tour de Georgia and Tour of California. "We've had some success, so I'm not terribly disappointed about Georgia," said Zellner. "We were more about California because it was our home state. But we're prepping these guys now - we're going to the Milk Ras in Ireland to get focused on Philly week and then going to Tour de Beauce with Mark Walters and Dominique as our Canadians."

Both Athens and Roswell are the first stops on the week-long Southeast portion of the USA Criterium Series, with Athens serving as the first race on the national USA Criterium Series schedule. A strong field of the top domestic teams is contesting these races. "Health Net and Jittery Joe's had full teams, and BMC has about five guys," said Zellner. "The only one missing is Toyota-United - it would have been good to have the whole family here, but it is still a full house!"

Pic does it again!

Under hot temperatures and strong winds Colavita Sutter Home's Tina Pic wound up her sprint out of the final corner to take the win over Sarah Caravalla (Aaron's) and Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine).

Back-to-back primes forced high speeds in the second race of the Southeast Crit Series. The 55 minute race was aggressive and many attacks were solidified over the climb on the backside of the circuit but wound up engulfed by the peloton after only a lap or two partly due to the strong winds and the effort of the riders.

Cheerwine drove the front of the field at the two laps to go mark for their notorious sprinter Laura Van Gilder, but Colavita/Sutter Home team director Jim Williams was pleased with his team's performance considering their reduced numbers. "We keyed off of Cheerwine's train because we didn't have the numbers today," Williams said. "Cheerwine did a good job of controlling the field in the end but we didn't have the numbers to challenge that so we were able to opportunistically steal a win."

Cheerwine's Laura Van Gilder started her sprint coming out of the final corner but was eventually taken over by Pic and Caravalla. "Once the field caught our teammate Katherine Scheatly my team was still fresh to contribute to the lead out," Van Gilder said. "On the course with the hill there was some reshuffling and we were able to maintain a good presence with all the girls there.

"The racing has been awesome by the women's field and really dynamic. There has been several smaller teams that have made a real presence and I have been really impressed by them," she added.

Criterium specialist Katherine Carroll (Aaron's) launched an attack over the last climb to contribute to the speed of the field, enabling her teammate Caravalla to jump on Pic's wheel before the final corner. Carroll held onto fourth place and the lead of the Southeast Crit Series omnium.
